BIOSHOCK Trophy Guide
By ShadeBlack
Introduction:
First off, if you’ve only just got this game and plan to get the platinum, I advise you play the game first on easy or normal, without this guide to get a feel for the game, and to get most of the easy trophies out of the way. However, if your plan is to do every trophy in one play through, go ahead and use this guide.
Vital Playthrough Information:
First Playthrough:
You have a choice here.. to start the game immediately on Hard Mode, or to start the game on easy mode to get most of the trophies to start off with.
Personally, I started on Hard Mode and did everything all at once.
If you do start on Hard mode, there are a few things you need to know before starting the game.
1) Do not kill Sander Cohen.
2) Turn off Vita Chambers – you can do this by going into the options during the game.
3) Since you have no Vita Chambers, Save often and plan your actions.
4) Always SAVE the little Sisters – it's greatly worth your while to do so!
After Completing the game on hard mode, you can then begin a new game on Survivor mode.
Second Playthrough:
Unless your first playthrough was on Easy, you should now be doing Survivor mode, along with the “I Choose the Impossible” trophy. For more information and tips on that trophy, and impossible mode gameplay, see the write-up in the “Trophies & Guide” section.
Trophies & Guide:

Here is a list of the weapon upgrade locations, although, they are not needed as most of the times, you will find them simply by being thorough in your exploration. Not to mention a couple of them you actually cannot miss. I believe one requires you to gain access to Sander Cohen’s personal quarters. If you are unsure on how to do this, skip ahead in the guide to find out how.

Take at least one photo in every research group
Research PhD
Max out all possible research
Quality Research Photo
The player has taken a Research Photo of the highest grade
Researched a Splicer
The player has taken at least one Research Photo of a Splicer
The research trophies are very easy to get, but just take a little while to do.
One main point I must get across is that there is more to research than the trophies in the game suggests. To get the Research PHD trophy, you must also max out research in the security bots, cameras, and also the turrets.
Researching gets you a huge boost in the game and some amazing tonics. To effectively, and quickly get the research done and out the way, take good snapshots of every enemy you come across at least 3 or 4 times. The first snapshot, you have a chance of getting an A based on how good the photo is, but the second, third and fourth will only give you C’s unless another enemy enters the photo. The enemies will indeed charge at you, but every time you take a photo, the game pauses, so you can just keep on snapping them until it stops giving you points for it.
Another Thing I’ll mention is to make sure you research the Houdini Splicer, and max out the research on them as fast as possible. The Houdini splicers are the ones that throw fire balls at you, and can teleport around the room in bursts of flames. By maxing out the research on these guys, you will get a very special tonic called Natural Camouflage, which allows you to become invisible when standing still. This is essential if you’re doing Survival mode without Vita-Chambers.
One Successful Hack
The player has performed at least one successful hack
Hacked a Security Bot
The player has successfully hacked a security bot
Hacked a Security Camera
The player has successfully hacked a security camera
Hacked a Turret
The player has successfully hacked a turret
Hacked a Vending Machine
The player has successfully hacked a vending machine
Hacked a Safe
The player has successfully hacked a safe
Skilled Hacker
The player has successfully completed 50 hacks
Hacking is very easy, especially when you get a couple tonics for your hacking skills. You’ll get the Skilled Hacker trophy about half way through the game if not earlier if you hack everything you come across.
Basic Inventor
The player has successfully invented at least one item
Avid Inventor
Successfully invent at least 100 items
Ammo Inventor
The player has successfully invented all possible ammo types
Easy stuff here, you will get the first one when you come across your first ‘U-Invent’. Avid Inventor and Ammo Inventor will come soon enough as you go through. Something you should NOT do is making loads of stuff when you don’t need them. Only make ammo you need when going through survival mode. If at the end of the game, you still do not have those two trophies, go ahead and make as much ammo as possible of all different types. Go one by one at first to get ammo inventor, then just make loads of the cheapest item. There is also a tonic that helps by decreasing the amount of items required to make the items from a U-Invent. This may help achieve you 100 items invented.
Tonic Collector
Collect or Invent 58 Tonics in the Physical, Engineering and Combat tracks
Now to be very honest with you, I got every tonic without the need of a guide. If you are go through the game and ensure you look in every crevice of every room, you will easily find every tonic in the game, that is, if you also max out your research and SAVE all the little sisters. That’s right! You can only get the tonic collector if you save the little sisters because the gifts given from Bridgett Tenenbaum (as delivered by rescued little sisters), will get you several good, and useful tonics and plasmids. One thing I will mention, as you’re playing through the game (especially on survival mode), you should not buy any tonics from the shop until you have the higher priority upgrades first. This means, you should get all the Health first, then any Tonic slot upgrades, then plasmid slot upgrades, then one or two EVE upgrades, and finally the tonics. Once you’ve got all the higher priority upgrades, you will notice that all the other tonics will be at a much needed reduced ADAM price.
Here is a list of tonic upgrades locations (list is widely available on the internet and I did not make this tonic list):
A good idea might be to tick these off as you go along.

Seriously Good at This
The player has completed the game on the Hard difficulty setting
You will get this automatically if you do Survival mode
Dealt with Every Little Sister
The player has either Harvested or Rescued every possible Little Sister
As explained before for another trophy, you MUST SAVE every little sister. The benefits of saving them all far outweigh the benefits of harvesting them. SAVE them all! “Keep it secret, Keep it safe!”
Lucky Winner
Hit the jackpot at a slot machine
Easy; save the game before using a slot machine, take a few tries on it and if you don’t get the jackpot, then you can just load up the game again to try it once more. This way, you won’t lose any money. Surprisingly enough, I got the jackpot in just two goes.
Toaster in the Tub
The player has shocked an enemy in the water
You’ll do this as part of a semi-in-game tutorial. If you miss the chance then, there are plenty more chances to do this including when you fight Dr. Steinman.
Completed Welcome (Hidden)
The player has successfully completed the Welcome To Rapture Level
Defeated Dr. Steinman (Hidden)
The player has defeated the crazed Dr. Steinman
Defeated Peach Williams (Hidden)
The player has defeated Peach Wilkins
Restored the Forest (Hidden)
The player has restored the forests of Arcadia
Completed Cohen’s Masterpiece (Hidden)
The player has completed Sander Cohen’s great masterpiece
Defeated Andrew Ryan (Hidden)
The player has defeated Andrew Ryan
Broke Fontain’s Mind Control (Hidden)
The player has broken Fontaine’s mind control
Became a Big Daddy (Hidden)
The player has become a Big Daddy
Defeated Atlas (Hidden)
The player has defeated Atlas
Irony (Hidden)
The player has taken a picture of Sander Cohen’s corpse
Found Cohen’s Room (Hidden)
The player has entered Sander Cohen’s personal quarters
You will do all these as the game unfolds as they are story trophies. However, please note the two trophies involving Sander Cohen. The first time you meet Sander Cohen in the flesh, you would have just finished ‘his’ masterpiece and he will be coming down the large staircase and there will be small fireworks going off. He will give you something for your hard work right there and then. You will be very tempted to kill him there and then, but you shouldn’t. DO NOT kill Sander Cohen. Why? Later on in the game you will come across Sander Cohen’s personal apartment in Olympus Heights. There will be two ordinary splicers with some music, to which Sander Cohen is forcing them to dance to. Cohen informs you to be careful and not to disturb the music or the two splicers. This is exactly what you need to do! Once you’ve disturbed either the music or the splicers, Sander Cohen will be very angry with you, opening the door to his personal quarters and come down to kill you. Fight him off (easy if you have a big daddy with you), take a picture of his dead body to get the trophy ‘Irony’. Afterwards, go upstairs to his personal quarters to obtain that trophy as well, not to mention a weapons upgrade and if I recall, a good amount of ammo, and a tonic.
Historian
Find every audio diary
This is another list that is widely available on the internet and was not made by me. I also did not use this; however, others might find it very frustrating trying to find them all by yourself.
One thing I will say though, there is an audio tape called “First Encounter” which you find in the ‘Farmer’s Market’, but actually it is listed in Neptune’s Bounty. When collecting, ensure you remember this so you don’t get mixed up.
Use this website for a list of audio tape locations: http://bioshock.wikia.com/wiki/Audio_Diaries
Little Sister Saviour (Hidden)
The player has completed the game without harvesting any Little Sisters
This is exactly the same as the other trophy called ‘Dealt With Every Little Sister’. Just make sure you SAVE every little sister, and you get this trophy at the end of the game along with a few others.
Brass Balls
Complete the game on Hard difficulty without using a Vita-Chamber
If you’re going straight to Survivor difficulty then you will get this automatically if and only you complete ‘I Chose The Impossible’ trophy. If you decide to do this first to get some experience doing it in a harder mode, then just make sure before you step out of the pod when you enter Rapture, to go into your options and change the settings to ‘Do Not Use Vita Chambers’.
A Man Chooses
Complete the game on Survivor difficulty
If you’re going for the ‘I Chose The Impossible’ trophy, then you will get this automatically, if not, then although it is a hard difficulty, the vita chambers will simply revive you every time you die, so you have nothing to worry about.
I Chose The Impossible
Complete the game on Survivor difficulty without using a Vita-chamber
No… It’s not impossible at all… in fact; it’s fairly easy once you learn a couple tricks.
The hardest part of this game is the beginning, even more so when you’re playing survivor mode. Here’s what I did when it came to the first Big Daddy:
The best way to kill it is to go back to the beginning of the level, where you will find a circus of value. From there you can buy electric bucks. You’ll need 12-16 of them. They will shock the big daddy for just less than a second, which is enough time to reload and shoot again. You’ll also need to be fairly close to doing a little bit more damage. My brother also noted to me (after I had finished the game), that shooting the Big Daddy’s in the back does more damage. You should certainly try this.
Now… the shotgun only has 4 rounds total loaded, so once you've exhausted them, you need to run, because the big daddy will be pissed that you've just shot him 4 times. Quickly use your lightning plasmid to shock him for a little bit longer and run round the corner. If the big daddy doesn't see you, then he will keep looking, but he won't charge at you in full speed unless he can see you.
After shocking him, you need to switch back to your shotgun while running away to make time to reload the shotgun fully with 4 more electric bucks. When approaching the big daddy, it a good idea to shock him with the plasmid first, so he doesn't charge at you when you're coming back to him. Another good idea to save the energy is to approach him from behind.
Don’t get too close to him either, as he will send you flying. And if you get pinned to a wall, you've lost the fight.
GENERAL TIPS:
You’re choice of weapons and plasmids are entirely up to you as you should feel comfortable playing the way you want to. But here are a few tips:
You WILL run out of ammo if you don't shoot them in the head. Ergo, a good weapon of choice is the crossbow. Once you get it, you can headshot enemies with deadly precision.
MAX the Research on the Houdini Splicer as soon as possible. Researching the Houdini splicer will give you the natural camouflage tonic and is your saviour in this game. Especially in survivor mode as it allows you to become invisible to ALL the enemies, as long as they don't see you move.
You can see that these two particular tips are mutually beneficial. You stay cloaked while you line up a good headshot.
Plasmid choice – don't buy plasmids or tonics until you've bought HEALTH; don’t buy EVE until you feel you need a little bit more later on in the game. The reason? They become cheaper with each chapter and one part in the game you start losing your health. On survivor mode, you're going to need as much health as possible for that particular chapter.
One particular plasmid that I used a whole lot was the Security bullseye. This plasmid allows you to tag an enemy, to which they won't notice you tagging them, but the security cameras pick up that tag, and order the security bots and turrets to start attacking that enemy. This works wonders with the Big Daddies later on in the game starting from the 2nd chapter.
SAVING
Save every couple of rooms, and at every event (e.g. a boss or suspicious looking room). also make sure you turn vita chambers off Before you walk out of the pod at the beginning of the game because there is a vita chamber right at the start of the level on the right hand side. if you walk by it, it will activate.
Platinum Trophy
Collected all other Bioshock trophies
Awarded the moment you complete the game if you have everything else. I got this the same time I got the ‘I Chose The Impossible’ Trophy, along with two others as well I think.
Summary:This game simply delivers on all fronts. For most people, this is considered among the best of the playstation 3 games.
Its great fun – its got a great story, gameplay, challenges, customisation etc.
With BIOSHOCK 2 coming out soon, anyone who hasn't played this game yet really should do! Although trophies aren't needed to play the second game, it would give a good background knowledge of Rapture, as im sure they will implicate many things from the first game into the second, even depite the timeline difference.
Overall, the trophies truly reflect what a great game this really is. ~Enjoy your Platinum!

August 5, 2009 at 7:18 pm #35085PS3 TrophiesKeymasterI've added a new rule since Shade originally posted his guides. It's that all guides should be posted within the forum and not on an external page. So he was nice enough to repost his old ones.
