First let me say, if you haven't played this yet and you liked Dead Space, go get this now. This game is amazing and there was no let down once so ever. I LOVE IT.
ANYWAY
There is a nice little trophy for beating the game on Hardcore mode. At first I thought no big deal, all games make you beat it on the hardest difficulty. Think again. This is going to be insane.
Not only is the difficulty increased, but you are only allowed three saves, for the ENTIRE game. There are also NO checkpoints, so if you die, you start over (or return to your last save). Finally the enemies re-pawn. So you can't kill them then go hunting for stuff, because they will just keep coming.
Needless to say this is going to be a beast. For anyone attempting to do it / doing it / completing it I say we give each other help and put some strategies here. The most important things are going to be where to save, which guns to use and what to upgrade.
So exciting =]

There are far more places in DS2 than DS1 where you get completely swarmed by the enemy and a stack of areas just packed with instant deaths. I was trying to pin-point the best places to save on my first playthrough and I gave up.
I think this is going to be best played with a friend. That way I can hand someone the controller when I feel like firing through my TV.

I've only heard one other person mention that before, so I wasn't sure if it was true. Also, I've read in one place that if you die 5 times, the game deletes your save. That one sounds untrue, but considering Hardcore mode, it very well may be.
February 2, 2011 at 6:46 pm #68887Doc-BMemberSounds like fun … But I'd rather have it harder than they water it down so it's more accessible to 'joe public'.
I'm going to wait till i complete ME2 before i start DS2… But i'm (not really) looking forward to trying 'Hardcore mode' .
Run and Gun… Emphasis on the run part
February 3, 2011 at 2:27 am #68900I773D33MABL3MemberI haven't tried it in Hardcore yet but a slight glitch I found helpful in the first game on impossible mode was carrying multiple versions of the same gun.
The game randomly drops ammo to (nearly always) match whatever you're carrying in your inventory. So if you have four different guns then they're, roughly, going to be getting 25% each of what you pick up.
If you buy the weapon packs from the PS Store then you can equip three different versions of some of the guns and that massively increases the chances of the random ammo drop being for that weapon. By the time you play the game on Hardcore you're going to know what weapon you find most useful and it's much easier to keep it well stocked and upgraded if you treble up on it and ignore the guns you don't use.
Like I said, I haven't tried it in Hardcore mode yet so I'm not sure if it works but it's making things a lot simpler on my second regular playthrough.
February 3, 2011 at 5:55 pm #68908Seibei4211MemberMan, I'm starting to think they made Hardcore mode a trophy just to get people to at least consider getting one of the DLC packs. Never would've thought about it otherwise. Cunning bastards.
Oh, and you know what's great? Apparantly the 360/PC users get a free checkpoint after they switch to disc 2 at the end of chapter 6. So they get to use their 3 saves on the second half of the game. PS3 users should get a 4th save or something to make up for that.
February 3, 2011 at 6:39 pm #68909scottish_wonderboyMember@ seibei i think the fact we dont have to swap discs is good enough
i just have my hardcore run for plat im thinking save at
end of chapter 6 just before the brute fight
end of 9/10 where u fight the tripods
end of 13 where u go through those lasers 5 mins before the eye machine
id recomend getting atleast 1 dlc to make life easier if possible u get a couple good suits and most weapons available from the start
im personally going to carry the plasma cutter for single enemys the pulse rifle for the wee bomb enemys and pods and the contact beam to sell its ammo. id recomend finding the force gun schemics in chapter 7 as its by FAR the best gun for harder difficultys if you upgrade its alt fire the r2 shot kills most enemys in 1/2 shots.
hope to have the plat by the weekend wish me luck

Enemy spawns I think so, I haven't tried yet but that's what I have been hearing. Die 5 times and delete? That has to be false. And if so when I save it I'll just put my save on a jump drive and load off that each time, that way it wouldn't make a difference.
Seems like the best “first save” would be right before the elevator in Chapter 7.. And I understand why =\
February 4, 2011 at 5:58 am #68916HardAndSloppyMemberI couldn't imagine playing this on the hardest difficulty, it wasn't all that easy on normal. And the whole three saves is a load of bull if you ask me. You should be able to save more than usual.
February 4, 2011 at 6:06 pm #68918scottish_wonderboyMemberdont know where u heard about enemy respawns but thats false im playing through hardcore just now made my 1st save at 7 and got there first time it was actually rather easy tbh. only problem i had was when your hanging upside down on the train i nearly ran out of ammo just made it too a store.
