does anyone really like finding hidden items ? does anyone find them just for fun or do you use a guide because you cant be bothered? i know they want you to play the game for ages but come on ! gta 200 pigeons who the hell would do that for fun ? did you ? i think not ! if they want you to play the game for ages cant there be something better than hidden items ?
February 18, 2010 at 8:01 pm #58042BigWoopMagazineMemberIt depends. Some games you can tell they're just there for the sake of being there, scattered randomly all over the place (Assassin's Creed 1 and 2, Tomb Raider Underworld) and are a total pain in the ass to find with no reward or a crap reward. That bullshit sucks. Other games the items actually do something for you, or are cleverly hidden in a fashion that makes them fun to find (uncharted 1 and 2, Trine, Bioshock, LBP). I especially enjoyed in LBP and Trine where the environment provided a puzzle for many of them, where you could tell that something was there, if you figure out what to do. Thats nice because its not so much about the hunt, but solving the puzzle. I enjoyed a lot in bioshock getting the back story, it wasn't necessary to get, but if you did it was well scripted and offered a glimpse into Rapture's histroy, leading up to the current events in the game. Many were obvious, and a few required thinking to get, a good mix. Wolfenstein made an attempt at the exact same thing, but ruined it in a number of ways, first with lame uninteresting scripting, and then having to hold a button for an extended time just to open the thing (WTF for?!). I eventually just stopped bothering. Infamous was another one where it was fun to find most of them, thanks to the sonar feature, and having to figure out how to get to some of them. Everyone should agree that the last 20 or so sucked royal ass unless you had a method from the start, and even then the last 1 or 2 gave everyone a migraine. Its a tough balance, and it seems every game has them, so its really a matter of picking which ones you care to do.

However, in some games that i really am not that into, i'll just google the locations of certain objects, but i always at least try to find most of them on my first playthrough of the game.

Weird username btw..
February 19, 2010 at 12:56 am #58075I773D33MABL3MemberI think it worked so well in games like LBP and Uncharted because those games were fairly linear. You still had to search the environment but it didn't require endless wandering, hoping to stumble across an item. The 300 ore patches in Red Faction were a head-wrecker to find and the bound serpents in Brutal Legend still have me doing laps of the game.
And lets not forget Far Cry 2. Some times I get the urge to try and find all the diamonds but I've yet to hate myself enough
February 19, 2010 at 5:01 am #58085xxKnightmarExxMemberUsually I would try to find them myself but sometimes if I cant bothered with the game or if I'm doing just for a trophy or something then i'll use a guide.
February 19, 2010 at 5:17 am #58089ZanatosMemberI try to get as many as I can on the 1st play thru, if I miss some then I refer to a guide.
KnightmarE, I love the sig man, made me laugh =]
February 19, 2010 at 6:47 am #58096MiiiitchMemberThey don't bother me you just got to be good at finding them, I can find most on the 1st playthrough and use a guide if I miss any.
February 19, 2010 at 6:52 am #58098NinjacatMemberI do attempt it, but then I usually give up half way through lol

Thats a good point. Open world games can be a real bitch, and those particular two games are definitely. I think Brutal is a little easier since you can get to know the game world by what it looks like. Red Faction was horrible because everything looks the same – I'll probably never get that trophy.
February 20, 2010 at 12:39 am #58127CoryAllenMemberhidden items facking suck! the only ones i don't mind getting are the ones like in bioshock and god of war where you're far better off if you get them but they're not impossible and grueling to find. but now days i hate even searching for like just 10 things. screw collectibles lol
February 20, 2010 at 12:53 am #58129I773D33MABL3MemberThat's what I though. I was on 298 ore patches for nearly four months just driving around aimlessly. My brother was over recently and I gave him the controller while I was going for a shower. I didn't even have the water running when he knocked on the door and told me he'd found them!!!
February 20, 2010 at 8:29 pm #58174One-Wnged_AngelMemberYeah, collectibles are very good when you have fun finding them. One example is The Legend of Zelda series.
On the other hand, some games can be really shitty when it come to collecting things. The ONLY problem I had with GTA IV was when I had to kill 200 pigeons and find 50 stunt jumps. I used a guide for the locations, thank God I did… still haven't got the platinum, though.
