I also only own the 40GB version and I'm filled up to about 15 GB left … but I'm going to buy a new HDD soon (160+ GB) and just insert it into the PS3. I don't think that 160 GB can get filled up that easily. Or would you recommend even bigger HDDs. Up to 500 GB are available in 2.5 format which fits inside the PS3.
September 2, 2008 at 5:11 pm #16377PS3 TrophiesKeymasterIf you're thinking of updating just go for an even bigger one right away. HD's are pretty cheap and you never know how much space you'll need in the future 🙂
But keep in mind that it's only one 500GB 2.5 drive that fits the PS3 atm. All others are too thick.
September 2, 2008 at 5:44 pm #16379PlayzockerMemberI thought all 2.5 HDDs can be used for the PS3…
Which HDD would be the one you would recommend/use?
September 2, 2008 at 6:21 pm #16386PS3 TrophiesKeymasterIt's the Samsung Spinpoint M6 that fits. 500GB HD's are still a bit expensive though. A 320GB HD will give you enough space and be more friendly to your wallet 🙂
September 2, 2008 at 6:30 pm #16391PlayzockerMemberI did a search on Amazon and the M6 do seem real cheap. Here are a few examples:
They should all fit and I think the first one would be the best. I also hat a FAT32 formatted external HDD so I can backup all data (gamesaves, installation data, PSN downloads, etc.) on there simply be creating a folder named “PS3”, then shut off the PS3, put the 320 GB HDD inside and copy the data from my external – should work, shouldn't it?
September 2, 2008 at 8:02 pm #16400killer3129Memberyer but if u buy a new hdd wont u have to start all your games agian?
September 2, 2008 at 9:11 pm #16406Fe77a7iMemberYou can back up the majority of game saves onto a USB with the exception of copyright protected game saves like RSV2 and NFS:PS which cant be backed up. The PS3 remembers profiles, PSN accounts and passwords without backing up.
September 3, 2008 at 1:06 am #16419PlayzockerMemberAnd unlike a normal PC, the OS of the PS3 is not saved on the HDD but somewhere else (where the profiles etc. are saved as well) so copying won't be too hard.
As long as all the savegames can be copied I won't have a problem – if there's no other way I can download my games again from the PSN (without using up another share since I got a few over a friend's account) and installing a game again would be the least problem. As long as none of my progress will be lost…
