Hey guys,
I'm not sure how many PlayStation 3 owners realise, but there is a neat little application under the Network menu called Life with PlayStation (used to be Folding@Home) that along with providing a cool little News & Weather World globe to look at (which should also be much improved soon with updates) can actually help fight diseases such as Cancer and Alzheimer's Disease!
How does it do this? Well through use of the Folding@Home 'channel' in the Life with PlayStation software, your PS3 runs a simulation of a 'folding' protein. Understanding how these proteins 'fold' can help make possible cures for a lot of protein-related diseases.
Your PS3 will download a little packed of data called a 'Work Unit' and it works away, 'folding' from between 4-8 hours usually before the work unit is sent back, ready to download the next work unit. Stanford University in California controls this 'Distributed Computing' program which is mostly run on donator's home computers. But in March 2007 the program was ported over to the PlayStation because of the CELL chip's supercomputing power! Sony was heavily involved in development of this program so you can be sure that you will have full support should anything go wrong whilst running this program. (I've had my PS3 'fold' 24/7 for over 15 months straight (stopping to play games etc obviously! lol) and hasn't skipped a beat! Plus the PS3 isn't plagued by heat issues like the RROD 360!
Ok.. so how can ya help out?
Join up to the All PS3 Trophies Folding@Home sub-team!
I started my own team back in November 2006 called Aussie Rules Footy – Team 52735. But no-one has to be an Australian or anything to join.. I simply chose that name becoz i love our national sport so much!!! lol So this team will be a sub-team of Aussie Rules Footy – Team 52735. We're a great team.. really going forward.. inside the top 750 teams (not bad when u consider there is over 150,000! And i run a team blog providing help to donators and general news for members.. reporting 'milestones' such as when u reach certain points figures.. its really cool anyway, and i'd love to involve more people in it!
In order to join the sub-team, firstly you have to understand how to use Life with PlayStation. Download it under the Network section of the XMB.
Then once you've loaded it up and on the Live channel .. Hold down SQUARE and press DOWN on the D-PAD to change to the Folding@Home channel. Now press TRIANGLE and goto Current Channel > Identity > Join Existing Team. Here you want to enter just the team no. 52735.
Now for changing your donor name.. to be included in the All PS3 Trophies sub-team.. you have to do this right! lol goto Change Donor Name under the Identity section..
use this exact name.. using '_' underslashes instead of spaces is a must, and obviously subsituting 'Name' with what you like.
All_PS3_Trophies_Name_PS3
The reason why this is so important is so your individual stats add up with others to makeup the sub-teams total. Also.. the extra '_PS3' on the end is because your folding on a PS3.. and it leaves ya open to fold on your PC, Mac or Linux computer as well (you can even fold using your graphics card). So say you wanted to run Folding@Home on your computer .. go to the official site's download section and you can find info there to help you out with installation. But you can then use your same name as ya PS3.. just leave off the '_PS3' so it looks like
All_PS3_Trophies_Name
One more thing that is important, for the PS3 version.. obviously not everyone will want to fold 24/7 (Folding 24/7 is by no means a 'requirement' and we welcome any member, whether they do one 8hr work unit a week.. or are Folding enthusiasts like myself who run 24/7!)
So theres one big thing u need to remember to effectively 'fold' and provide the maximum benefit to Stanford Uni and the Folding@Home project, and therefore to the 'Science' of it all.. its Deadlines.
The 'work units' you download, work on then upload again each have 'deadlines' which just means that if you don't get the work unit returned within a certain amount of days, the work has to be dealt to someone else in order for the science to move forward. Luckily there is a very easy way to make sure you don't miss any deadline.. and therefore score the maximum amount of points per WU you return.
Automatic Shutdown. This will turn off your PS3 after it has processed and uploaded the current work unit.. therefore making sure you get points.. but gives you better control of how often you want to 'fold'. To use this feature:
Current Channel > Settings > Automatic Shutdown > After Current
At the moment, the Life with PlayStation program isn't as good as what it could be as far as layout and menu features etc goes (the science stuff though is tuned to the max!) .. so bare with Sony as they constantly try to improve the program, much like they do with firmware updates.
I promise all those who join the All PS3 Trophies sub-team will feel really good knowing that by running their PS3s whilst not gaming, they are furthering science in such an important field!
Ohh and as far as power usage goes.. If you have an early 20GB or 60GB you most likely will drain 200W.. if you are on a 40GB or an 80GB (have they got 160GBs yet? coz they'll be the same as well) on about 125W. If i fold 24/7 .. i have calculated it costs me $15/month (Aussie dollars.. and with my electricity rate).. and yeh i did this with a proper power meter etc so its spot on. I figure.. 50c a day is nothing.. and once you get involved in Folding@Home.. you wonder why you didn't get involved earlier.. put some computers folding etc. lol its a disease in itself.. its addictive and fun to be a part of!
Join up guys
Thanks

yes indeedy! lol so sorry its really long.. but well.. i had to explain everything. A lot of people try an introduce Folding@Home to people… and when they miss out the details.. people miss deadlines.. don't get points and get disillustioned with it all coz they don't know why they're missing out on points.
EDIT: Please choose a name and stick to it.. coz if u change names.. ur stats won't carry with ya.. and then we end up with a messy lookin team stats page.. full of random All_PS3_Trophies_ names. Just choose one (maybe your PSN id?) and then sub it in for 'Name' here – All_PS3_Trophies_Name_PS3 …… Cheers guys
March 21, 2009 at 5:19 pm #22019KILLER369Memberyou have no idea wat the hell your talking about.
through modern science we (as in humanity) have beeten most diseases, even cancer, yes cancer, however, the government will keep these facts out of the public eye for at least another 15 years, why you ask, isn’t it simple? because people can get such diseases as cancer, aids, alsimers etc quite easily, and the treatments for such ailments would have to be free. but the reason why they don’t tell us is because the governments of each country put a catastrophic price tag on such treatments, this way the government get a lot more money than if the treatments were done through public hospitals.
other people have tried to bring this to the public eye in america, japan, china & other places but they met “difficulties”. the UN want us to think the world is a free place where you can say and do anything you want (within reason). true to a certain extent, but if you threaten the profit of the big men in suits you WILL be “delt with”. argue all you want but i am right, and in less than 50 years, hopefully your minds will be opened.
now this is little off subject isn’t it
March 21, 2009 at 5:37 pm #22020KILLER369Memberppl like you need something to work on or you get insane. i suggest trying to find out how to successfuly harness our magnetic field and strengthen it by examining the electrons in our brain stem, then applying nanites to artificially enhance the electrons then create an organ to distribute the different electrons through your body into the skin and secreat electron particles onto the surface area of the skin causing a bi-polar magnetising effect to give you the ability to control the different particles in the near environment.
btw if you don’t understand then your in the wrong type of discussion. lol
March 21, 2009 at 11:18 pm #22027shadeblackParticipantI really have nothing against you, but I'm about to argue every point you've just said. please don't this as a personal attack, but rather a good spirited debate.

No. I firmly believe Cancer is incurable. we don't even have a grasp on cancer. we hardly even know what causes it. And as for most other diseases – we can treat, but we can rarely cure.
KILLER369 said:

Maybe the American Government would.

Again, you seem to be mistaking the American Health system for the rest of the world. Seriously, the american health system is one of the worst around.
England, for example has National Health Insurance. No payments required or needed. I think you need to watch a certain documentary called “sicko”.
KILLER369 said:

I imagine they would, because it sounds insane. what you're talking about is a theory about a conspiracy. that's one step into crazy. and no one really listens to crazy.

The UN has nothing to do with government money incmoe, outcome and/or profit margins.
The UN was formed in world war II, which replaced the league of nations. it was formed in order to prevent wars and world wars happening again. So ask yourself this. if they really thought the world is a free place, then why would there even be a UN? your logic is flawed.

This is all just waffle. I'm sorry but you can't honestly expect people to read this and think you're not just stringing words together to make you sound smart, right? do you really!?
An Electron is a point particle. it has zero dimensions and has no mass.
You want to strengthen an electron… why? an electron contains a negative electric charge, there is no need to strengthen it. And you can't strengthen it by examining the brain stem either – the brain stem controls the motors and sensory distribution of nerve fibres to the face and neck via the cranial nerves.
Nanites? ARE STILL THEORETICAL! even if they were readily avaiable, what would they do to an electron? If nanites are made in the near future, they would probably be used in search and destroy missions – searching for stuff like cancer cells and eliminating them.
And then after this magically, and somehow 'enhanced' (for what reason is unknown), you want to make a completely new and unnessacary organ (where exactly would this organ fit in our bodies anyway?) to distribute “different electrons” (how they are different is also unknown), in order to marraculously heal ourselves.
… The human body generates a very small, subtle electro-magnetic field, which is generated by the CHEMICAL reactions within cells and the ionic currents of the nervous system.
And on a final note, even with this magical power of controlling electrons you speak of, you still wouldn't be able to heal yourself with it, and you certainly wouldn't be able to control Zero-D environment.
YOU'RE LIVING IN A SCIENCE FICTION FANTASY WORLD!

dude your an idiot
millions of people are catching cancer DAILY its because of smoking and what not
March 21, 2009 at 11:57 pm #22032KILLER369Memberthat is exactly wat the people whoe doubted the moter engine, the jet engine, the steam engine, the electro engine, the hydro engine, the mobile phone, the internet, the computer, the AI in machines, the laser, the “death ray”, the light bulb, gun powder, the cannon, the musket, nuclear fission, electricity, space travel, the thrusters on the space shuttles, the magnet, the gravitational force, bending light, the earths position in space, mathematics, educational schooling, freedom rites, and every thing else created by man.
i also suspect that you think cloning biological entiyies is playing god.
the thing about particles is that you can distort and mutate them. yes there are more than one type of electron.
and yes humans have the ability to cure cancer. cancer is a type of tumer, every living organism has it even synthetic entities have it, but certain cells in certain people react to the person’s lifestyle, environment, mental condition & physical condition etc.
the things i have mentioned are realistic. and you said (in bold) that im living in a fantasy sci-fi world, well arn’t we all?
we have robots able to walk, run, talk and show human characteristics. we are also on the verge of sending a shuttle to mars. we are getting a drastically high number of “extra terrestrial” signals. we are on the verge of creating a non fuel hydro vehicle.
infact wen you look at it, all those comic books from the 20’s all the way through to the 80’s are now becoming reality and there is no denying that.
so argue all you want but one day you will be eating your words, just like the guy who turned down bill gates’ offer to go 50-50 on microsoft.

Once again, this is all waffle. you completely failed to finish that paragrph. in essence, you wrote: “that is exactly what the people who thought [Stupid long list of nonsense], and everything else created by man. There was no point in there at all, no evidence of any structure, and no explanation to this aborted use of words.
And another thing – Gravity, the Earth and Space was not made by man.
And yet another thing – LIGHT DOESN'T BEND. light can be refracted and reflected, but it NEVER bends.
and even one more thing – the “Death Ray” is completely hypothetical, and since then until the present day, it only resides in fiction.
KILLER369 said:

Religion has nothing to do with science, and even If I, or anyone else for that matter WAS or IS religious, you should know better than to prejudge them and discriminate against them based on their views. Such a (still somewhat theoretical) concept depends entirely on what each individual believes. such belief enforces their own moral values to the extent of a socially dynamic and acceptable viewpoint.
KILLER369 said:

No. you can't. and no, there is only one type of electron, and it is called an electron. once again, you are getting confused.
Although there are many different types of sub-atomic particals, an electron is and always will be an electron. an electron is not a magic partical to which you can 'control' to explain anything and everything you can imagine. Once again, an electron is very simply, a negatively charged subatomic partical.
the only exception to this is in Electron configuration, where electrons can move energy levels in the form of a photon. however, there can only be two electrons in one orbital at any one time.
With that in mind, a photon is not an electron. The electron simply hops on for a ride when there is some free obital space.
KILLER369 said:

No it isn't, Cancer is a group of diseases in which an uncontrollable and uncontained growth of cells in the body. It is one of the most vague diseases around as it can affect any part of the body, and then spread to other parts. Cancerous cells most often produce a tumor becuase the disease is causing the body grow the cells beyond the point of which it's needed. Therfore Cancer is not a type of tumour. Although a tumor is the abnormal growth of cells, the two are clearly different.
Having said all that about cancerous tumors, some forms of cancer do not ever develop tumors.

this is the only thing you've said so far that's made sense and is correct. well done. you should give yourself a pat on the back.

I am indeed debating, but unfortunately, you can't seem to come up with one valid point, or reasoning for that matter behind your deluded waffle nonsense. seriously, you have yet to make one valid point on anything.
Oh, and by the way, You've even got this thing about bill gates completely wrong as well. PC-DOS was sold to IBM as a one time offer for $50,000, then Bill gattes insisted that Microsoft would keep the liscensing, copywrite and rights to sell themselves. they did, which is what continued to make them the money. there was no offering involved.
March 22, 2009 at 12:21 pm #22161KILLER369MemberSECTION ONE:
you don’t understand, i am talking about the people who created these things had doubters. such as galileo for example, he tried to explain to humanity that the earth revolves around the sun, and what did the mindless corupted apes at the vatican do? they put him under house arrest for the majority of his life.
that type of thing has happened whenever a person has came up with an idea, EXCEPT with the nazi’s. im not a nazi lover of course, however, i understand what they did, in seven years the nazi’s did what would of taken the rest of us seven hundred years. without the nazi’s we would still be trying to find out how to send signals through air to communicate from britain to someone in japan.
SECTION 2:
religion has everything to do with science!
there are ALWAYS idiots protesting to NASA to stop harassing “god” with their shuttles, there is ALWAYS protesters protesting about modern science is an abomination to “god.
and you know what i aint pre-judging religion neither.
religion was a way to keep the loneliness from man, to create a father figure to look over over us protect us e.g. “god”. but then someone created the “devil”. mistake number one.
a powerful king turned to his priest and said “how can i make the “slaves” work harder”. to which the priest replied “let me look at the bible. oh yes there is a beast that will damn their souls for eturnity if they refuse to what you say”. and no this isn’t proved by any means, it’s the most logical explanation though.
however, there is another possibility. extra terrestrial biological entities could have visited us around twelve thousand years ago (roughly the creation date of the pyramids) and the bumbling apes known as humanity took them as “gods”.
but theres a passage of the bible. “and the father descendant upon this earth and created man in his image” (not exact).
now what’s the only animal that is out of place on this earth? compared to all the other billions of creature’s, only five billion creature’s of the same species stand out. yes im talking about humanity. so it is a possibility that a race of EBE’s gave us life , cloned from themselves, merged with the apes of this planet, to create us.
im not at all stating that this happened, i am just giving other possibility’s than a rather large man wearing a white robe with a large beard came from the sky on a cloud, created the earth and all the creatures in seven days, then fucked off never to be heard from again, except for sending his son to piss of a couple of romans and get himself killed on a cross. does that sound believable? no? and yet people live their whole lives believing such nonsense.
but it’s their decision. now what i have against religion is that it’s the primary cause of war, it’s supposed to help us yet it kills us, much like everything to do with humanity.
SECTION 3:
actually the word “electron” covers all the types of electron, such as humanity covers “coloured” people, asian people, caucasian people etc.
SECTION 4:
ok having done some research your right about that, but your wrong about us not knowing that much about it.
we have the ability to cure it, do some research you’ll eventually find the proof. an example of our ability to cure it is luceimier.
luceimier was a big problem in the eighties and start of the nineties, but then scientists miraculously brought out special treatment without almost no public research on it. so we do have the ability to cure cancerous cells.
SECTION 5:
thank you i will.
SECTION 6:
you are talking about a completely different matter.
i am talking about Paul Allan who co-founded microsoft.
Bill Gates decided to turn microsoft into a business, but after the first few years/months, Paul Allan resigned to create the multi billion dollar industry known as “vulcan Corp” but it’s nowhere near successful as microsoft. he stated to Bill Gates personaly that he thought microsoft was a dead end.
now look at him, he has a current networth of around ten billion, whereas Bill Gates has a current networth of around one hundred billion. whose the looser here?
March 22, 2009 at 1:36 pm #22162thedaxxmanMemberDude, research Galileo a little more . He stated that the world was spheric and not a cube, as the Vatican believed. He was then inprisoned for the remainder of his life just because he went against the “truth” of the church and puplished and told many people of his research. This in point led the church to put him in a prison which eventually became house arrest. While he was on “house arrest” he puplished a book which Einstein used and then later discovered more and more about the actuall truth and not the shit that religion pushes. And with your cancer theories, we do have a cure, its just the corporate mindwashed zombie masses of the government have been keeping it a secret for years. THEY HAVE AIDS CURE TOO!!! Its just corporate America letting its own people die for more money. If this country was really against smoking then they would just shut down the tobbacco companys. The thing is, they won't, because its just more greedy bastards trying to drain more and more money out of this country, its kinda like the nuetron bomb.
March 22, 2009 at 1:38 pm #22163thedaxxmanMemberAnd you leave Lahmy out of this. He was just trying to be nice. All you did was come in here with your non-researched waffle theories and just be a dick to him.
March 22, 2009 at 1:41 pm #22165Lahmy88MemberOk guys.. no offence.. but yous are getting off-topic.. I appreciate that my thread has created a bit of talk.. but it is really hijacking it.
I just want to clarify that Folding@Home is actually run by a group within Stanford Uni called Pande Group. It's totally not for profit.. and 'Papers' are written with the reasearch gained by the project. These papers are available free to everyone.. so any scientist or whatever can use what they've learned to further their own research.. Pande Group will never 'sell' results or 'sell' their distributing computing power.
Folding@Home is the most powerful supercomputer in operation.. just at 5 Petaflops now! The Petaflop was only broken in late 2007 by F@H.. so we've come a long way through use of PS3s and GPU systems. But I would like to think that distributed computing is something everyone can get involved in.. not just computer enthusiasts.. becoz when you think about it.. it has such potential. People can choose what to put their computers power towards (as they're are many DC projects out there) but i believe F@H is the most worthy, and thats why i support it so much.
Any more wackos wanna put-down my thread.. go ahead.. BUT please start your own separate thread first called 'I'm putting down Folding@Home because i haven't done any research into it'
Any team members?
EDIT: Thanks daxxman.. didn't see your post before i starting my reply 😉

I have done plenty of research but im glad that your agreeing with me about the corporate corruption.
and to Lahmy im only trying to save people time rather than waste precious hours researching things that have already been cured. it’s like trying to invent a lawn mower agen, its already been done you’d just be wasting your time.
like the governments of ALL counties not just U.S but britain and China and all the other players in the world just want more profit so don’t just narrow it down to the U.S.
and the most powerful super computer is used by the U.S military, not stanford university.
