Hideo…what the hell happened to you?
Hideo didn't do this. His company of retards who can't make a game by themselves were just crying and shitting all over the floor. Then he was just like, “Guys, I'm so tired of this. Let's just make PlatinumGames do it.” and that made them feel better. Now we got super robo ninja Bayonetta with Gekkos! I'm going to hold off on playing this for a while since I'm not hyped about it at all. By the way…. The Phantom Pain is probably MGS5!
December 15, 2012 at 6:24 am #72589AGENT_P6MemberI still hold him accountable. Even though it stars Raiden, it shouldn't have Metal Gear anywhere on the title, and if Hideo said “Metal Gear shall not be on the title” then indeed Metal Gear would definitely not be on the title.
I bet the game is pretty decent for its genre. In fact I would probably buy it and really enjoy it as a hack and slash. But its the title that really gets me. Like if it was simply called “Raiden's Revengeance” or something like that, a lot of the Metal Gear fans would gripe a little less. Don't get me wrong, there's still reason to gripe since its an MGS character in a hack n slash, but I think we would gripe less because the title would let us know that this isn't the next chapter of Metal Gear per se.
Put bluntly, I think they rode the popularity of the “Metal Gear” title as a means to sell more units of the game. They wouldn't get similar sales if the title didn't say Metal Gear, even if it says Hideo Kojima. That was their mistake IMO. They basically sold out on their MGS fans by using the MGS title to sell copies of a game that aren't MGS in heart and soul.
Now there is the argument that Raiden is not Snake. Snake shoots and performs CQC in a jam. Raiden is by nature of his character and backstory, a hacker and slasher. So therefore it only makes sense really to make a game starring Raiden a hack and slash. And there may be the argument that despite genre, the story of MG is in this game (yet to be proven). I think even if this is true, the nature of this game ruins what I percieve to be the heart and soul of MG. I percieve MG to be a deep theme about the monstrosity of war, politicians, and of course how they are molded by “the times” as Boss used to always say. As a result, during my playthroughs of Metal Gear, I felt like Hideo's vision was to teach peace instead of war. From the dialogue in the cutscenes down to the simple fact that nonlethal measures such as a tranq gun were wiser to use than lethal measures made me feel like the underlying message was that of peace. I know I'm getting a little philosophical about it all but its truly what I thought as I played the game.
Now fast forward to this hack and slash. If my hunch about Hideo's message and vision is indeed accurate, and said message is such an important underlying piece of his vision, then it should be a fairly obvious that Revengeance cannot achieve this message of peace. It is simply too brutal and violent. (I don't mind violent games, just saying it belies the soul of the series in this instance). They glorify the act of slicing enemies into scores of pieces by making it the heart of the game engine; that super-cool slo-mo that was the hub of content for all the trailers we've seen.
And aside from that, sorry to say but Raiden is not even in the same galaxy of “badass” that Snake is. Sure he can mess some things up, but Snake has way too much character. They can't let Snake die. If he does die, than they must make prequels so his character lives on and continues to be that amazing hero to us that he is.

Oh, OK.
Yeah, I'm wondering what non-lethal takedowns there will be in this game, because I like the aspect of being able to go through an area without taking a life. I prefer to go through an area (or game, for that matter) like that but if you give me a solid reason to take a life, I'll go through with it.
January 15, 2013 at 9:23 pm #72712scotty243MemberMaybe I was just a bit too harsh on this game?
But why the ***NO PROFANE LANGUAGE PLEASE*** is there an Alert phase going on???!!
January 17, 2013 at 4:14 am #72714Seibei4211MemberI don't look at this as a Metal Gear game. It's just a Platinum Games game to me. If you're not into Platinum Games, then there's no reason to be into this. This really doesn't look like it was made for Metal Gear fans anyway. Metal Gear seems like it's more about story than gameplay and Platinum's the opposite.
That video is awesome, by the way. I hadn't actually looked at any unedited gameplay footage before. I also didn't know that's what Raiden sounded like. I thought he'd be less gruff.

Well that's the thing, I don't want this game to be a Metal Gear game at all. It's just that after playing MGS4 about 6-ish times now, I'm so fcuking sick of seeing a goddamn alert phase and the stealth-like mechanics of a MGS game. As for the story, it's a story that fits Raiden as well as the style the game presents, which is what I've personally wanted from MG for some time now. I'll have to personally try a demo or something of this out. I think the demo releases in 2 weeks?

January 25, 2013 at 9:15 pm #72783scotty243MemberSo, basically, what we have here is a “Hack 'n Slash” game with Stealth mechanics. Hm… Do you guys know what the basic foundations of gameplay for a Hack 'n Slash game are? Hm? Any of you?
It's motherfcuking blocking and dodging.
^ See that, this game features NONE of that, whatsoever. Why the fcuk are you going to develop an action game without the basic “requirements”? This just blows my mind, it really does. Along with the gameplay mechanics, the Blade mode that every single game journo as well as E3 “Play testers” have just moaned about how incredible and simplistic the cutting is – Almost like slicing that nice slick piece of butter for toast. Well guess what? It's dreadful. I honestly cannot fathom at how poor the controls are nor explain how bad this whole game controls.
Let's move onto this Stealth right here, which I told you ladies was in here!! This game features Stealth?! Although it's an action game?! WHAT?! Unless you are superb at this game, the truth is, just fcuking stealth it since once an alarm triggers, it's essentially game over since the controls are disgusting and it's brutal passing through waves of expertly trained CQC specialists.
I cannot just explain how the gameplay for once in a game just makes me not want to play it. I don't mind suffering through a shitstorm of gameplay, like The Walking Dead, to get a meaty story, but what I do despise is when you have a game that misses basic gameplay features.
January 25, 2013 at 10:27 pm #72786Seibei4211MemberThe stealth's pretty tacked on, and this is the simplest combat system I've ever seen in a Platinum Games game. It's just light and heavy attacks, but they don't really combine into any useful combos. I don't care if there's a block button (Bayonetta doesn't have one), but there has to at least be a dodge roll with invincibility frames that you can do mid-combo.
