Jesus Christ, Denzel, just because you and I saw Man of Steel doesn't mean everyone on the face of the planet did! Put some spoiler warnings in that novel! That's just not cool!
June 28, 2013 at 1:53 am #73473I773D33MABL3MemberHaven't posted in this thread in donkey's and I can't remember half of what I've seen recently but I'll through in my two cents worth on the movies mentioned above.
First off: Scotty, nathan has a serious point about your last post, you pretty much describe the entire ending and you should edit in a warning.
(***SPOILERS***)
Then again, MoS should have come with a warning. Struggled to stay awake through the entire film. The action scenes are so overblown they just end up being dull. There's only so many times I can watch a guy get smashed through a building. Doing it to a bigger building does not revive the excitement. CG for it's own sake is no longer impressive. And I do have to agree with Denzel that the dramatic poignancy of some deaths was severly undermined by the catastrophic loss of life that went completely unremarked on.
The CG was also largely piss-poor with some of the character animation looking like mid-90s rejects.
And a special mention has to go to some of the worst dialogue ever to be written. “This man… is not our enemy” Actually buried my face in my hands at that one.
I also watched the Avengers for the first time recently. A good movie but maybe a little diappointing. I think the hype had just built this up to much for me.
Iron Man 3 kept me a lot more entertained than I thought it would considerg the utter shite-pile that was IM2. The CG team got carried away with a little too much bollocks towards the end but there was enough of the movie shot away from the suits to fit in some properly engaging plot. Got in a few solid laughs as well.
I watched Trollhunter on Netflix and it's probably the best film out of the bunch I've mentioned. Surprisingly good CG for a low budget film but (for the most part) kept it subtle enough to avoid distracting from the tension. Some people are put off by subtitles but miss this at your peril.

It's funny you should mention the 'staying awake' thing. A lot of the time that's used loosely but never literally, but despite the rather high volume that cinemas like to play movies at these days I very nearly nodded off!! Maybe it's my age
June 30, 2013 at 2:28 am #73482gr8jrfanMemberI will totally agree that the dialogue in Man of Steel is pretty awful. The jokes with the 2 army people at the end were uncomfortably bad. Other than that, it's still just nitpicking. I don't bother looking for flaws in a movie and a movie is considered good or average in my eyes so long as the flaws don't distract or take away from my enjoyment of the movie. And apart from the dialogue, nothing bothered me. Hate on Man of Steel all you want. If overlooking some minor weak points means I have a better time watching it, then that's fine by me.

Without trying to hate on the movie (we all remember the Avatar incident!) I just couldn't find anything redeeming in Man of Steel. I was hyped for it as I was hoping it'd be something along the lines of the Batman reboot but after the first half hour, complete boredom set in and didn't lift. I liked the cast, I liked the stuff on his background (Both Krypton and Earth) but once Zod and the little rascals turned up it just became a CG fest and there are way too many movies doing it better to impress with that alone.
Anyways, that's the last of my dumping on it!
I watched a movie called Crash yesterday. It's been around a few years but I'd never given it a second glance. Sat down to watch something random while eating some food and ended up mesmerised for nearly two hours. I won't go into any real details as I think watching it without expectations or pre-set ideas will make it more enjoyable.
It doesn't re-invent the wheel but it's just masterfully told.

I'm assuming you mean the Paul Haggis Oscar-winning one and not the David Cronenberg weird-as-fcuk one?
July 2, 2013 at 8:11 pm #73491I773D33MABL3MemberDefinitely the first
July 9, 2013 at 8:57 pm #73499gr8jrfanMemberSaw the Lone Ranger a couple days ago and I thought it was pretty good. It definitely met my expectations and it was a lot of fun! That horse actually made me laugh a couple times, too.
July 23, 2013 at 4:32 am #73509gr8jrfanMemberPacific Rim is the greatest thing ever created. Bring all your friends and family to see this movie in Imax 3D at a theater near you. I don't care, just spend all your moneydollars on this movie whatever you do. We as a nation must make sure movies that center around giant badass fighting robots and monsters are more successful than the lowest common denominator that is Grown Ups 2.
Wow, that almost all that unintentionally rhymed. Cool.

Some of the best special effects ever, on an epic scale. Almost, let down by some incredibly ropy acting by some of the cast. Definitely worth checking out though.
July 30, 2013 at 11:20 pm #73515I773D33MABL3MemberOkay, so a few additions.
World War Z – Enjoyed it quite a bit, I know it makes a mess of the book but I've never read it so I don't care! Some stupid plot-holes but I was in a forgiving mood.
Pacific Rim – I really wanted to like this but it never rose above “meh” for me. The FX are pretty but that's standard fare these days. Just never hooked me in.
Dredd – Park your brain at the door as you shall not need it here! A plot that a monkey could've written but just so much fun! I've never read the comics but this actually has me interested in looking into them.
The Watch – Total shit. About three laughs in the whole film (all courtesy of Jonah Hill) and tedious action. Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn haven't been funny in years. They both should have retired after Dodgeball.
Wrath of the Titans – Literally every aspect of this movie is arse. Premise is retarded, plot is mush, script is laughable, the actors seem embarassed to be there and the FX (considering they're the only selling point) are mediocre at best and downright mingin' at worst. Pegasus flying across the sky is genuinely painful to watch. Turned it off on the hour mark…

That is still to this day one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I actually made it all the way to the end of the film, but I really didn't enjoy getting there aside from laughing at it with the people that I was with.
Spent the last of my money on both parts of the Dark Knight Returns. (totally broke for a month now, beats working my ass off for minimum wage like Ben though! ) When they announced Man of Steel 2, Peter Weller read a quote from the second part:
“I didn't have to go easy on you. A different binding agent, a stronger mix… I want you to remember that. I wanted to remind you to stay out of my way. In all the years to come, in your most private moments, I want you to remember the one man who beat you!”
So I watched the movies and got super fcuking hyped. I'm a little disapointed they're not going to do a sequel with just Superman before the Batman crossover but maybe they'll accomplish what I wanted in the sequel while Batman's still there. Regardless, The Dark Knight Returns was really, really good. Once the Joker came out of retirement, everything kept me at the edge of my seat. Then there's the fight with Superman, which was beyond awesome, from a Batman fanatic's perspective at least. If that's the tone they're going with, the new Batman better be pretty badass….
August 1, 2013 at 10:13 am #73522Frederick_PlaystationMemberFrank Miller's Dark Knight Returns comic wise was bad imo.
Havent seen the animation though, but its the same story so I guess it wouldn't change my mind.
August 1, 2013 at 7:40 pm #73524I773D33MABL3MemberWatched 'Savages' last night. I'd heard bad things but I loved it. Well worth looking up.
