I need a new laptop. NEED. I am stuck with this:
http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&source=hp&q=latitude+D520&gbv=2&aq=f&oq=&aqi=g-m1
I am missing 5 buttons, one of them being the E button. I cannot write essays, or anything else for that matter. Now, I have to go out and buy one and I have my heart set on a sexy new MacBook. You know those new unibody ones they bought out in October?
http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook?mco=MTAyNTQzMzg
I can almost afford it so money is not an issue and it does everything I need (and a whole lot more). 800 quid is probably my budget.
What I was wondering was are there any Mac users out there? I know that almost all Mac users say Mac is better than PC but I want to know first hand. And the PC users; what do you use? Are you on XP, Vista or 7? Also can anyone show me some good PCs rather than a Mac? I haven't really looked into PCs because I want to “upgrade”, as they say, to a Mac.
Anyway, cheers in advance guys.
January 7, 2010 at 8:14 pm #54707pool96MemberI (well my dad) has a MacBook Pro, but I use it as my number one computer, and it's really good, to be honest I can't find a single fault with it.
January 7, 2010 at 10:03 pm #54715parnakasMemberI have a Mac. Best thing i have ever owned. Never have any problems with it, never freezes, never buffers for too long, applications are super-reliable, and it is a very user-friendly machine. It is amazing if you have a creative mind, and plan on doing Video-editing, photo-editing, or recording music (as i do). I have the desktop Mac, and am currently saving up to get a MacBook, because they are just that awesome.
The Mac is amazing. Save up the money, and get one. Way more reliable than Windows.

Yes Mac’s are better than Microsoft, purely on the basis that they design the Hardware and the Software themselves rather than a generic Microsoft OS that conforms to set form factors to work with hundreds of different companies.
Windows 7 is a massive improvement and is probably the closest thing yet to the Mac. Mac’s require less resources in general compared to Intel x86 based PC’s. I havent tried the 64 bit version of Win7 – presuming it makes better use of a lot of RAM – would be the most important asset of a 64 bit pc/laptop.
Where x86 based Laptops go they require a lot of resources, even A lot of RAM – max 3GB for Vista(you can put in 4GB but it will only ever make use of 3gb!) High Processor power with v good L1 L2 Cache and a Quality Nvidia Graphics card (I would recommend Nvidia for Laptops and AMD for PC’s) and a strong cooling system you would still find the laptop working slowly and freezing, even on AC power
I have fixes for a lot of Vista slow problems and more than willing to share should anyone require them. When it comes to laptops go for the Mac. Mac’s work equally as good if not better than a Vista laptop with much higher spec. Just goes to show that bigger numbers in specs don’t always mean they are better as Microsoft tend to make poor use of these specs and waste a lot of memory.January 10, 2010 at 4:49 pm #54976shadeblackParticipantI have to ask, and don't mean this as offensive, but if you've already made up your mind on what you're getting, then why post?
Additionally, I have to disagree with some of the comments made on this thread about how retarded PCs are.
MACs are indeed a decent product. it's hard to find a fault on them because you're so limited to it's own OS, they're own programs etc. please note, I AM NOT saying the macs are limited in software. if that's what you read, then your reading it wrong.
with a desktop PC, people can experiment more. get a program to do just about anything. build their own to do whatever they need it to do, and can far surpass to power of a mac.
yes vista is a disappointment, but why are you basing your judgement on an operating system, when you should be discussing the PC. if the argument is PC v MAC, the operating system should be discusses as an individual product, and should not harm the subject's defence in question.
Vista was indeed a poor excuse for an OS. but over time it got better. Why was it so bad? because microsoft released it before it was officially windows 7. Windows 7 is what Vista should have been.
Windows 7 is a huge improvement to Vista as it was based around vista, and improved. 64bit win7 is even more of an improvement.
another thing that irritates me is that people compare laptops to macs. and for better reason this time. afterall, the mac is a type of laptop. but with it's limitations, you're much less likely to cause the problems you'll find on an average laptop due to the 'average idiot' using it.
so what's my main point here? Laptops and PCs are slow and ill-tempered mainly because of their disgruntled masters, and their inability to use the product they have purchased.
I myself have used PCs with win95, 98, 98se, 2000, ME, XP, Vista, win7, and linux. The only REAL problems i've ever had with an operating system is 98, ME, and rarely XP.
if you treat your PC well, it will treat you well. simple as.
Both MACs and PCs have ups and downs.
The virus argument is seriously redundant.
The power argument is redundant.
the software argument is retarded.
and the OS argument is just silly.
The question is not: “Which one is better?”
But:
Do you know how to handle a PC properly?
Because computers don't make mistakes, Humans do.

January 10, 2010 at 6:00 pm #54984parnakasMemberShade – i get what your saying.. but who the hell has the time to build a PC to make it super-powerful and not to mention the cost of the things.
And we are comparing Macs and PCs for the “average person”. Most computer users want a simple, easy-to-use, reliable machine. Which in my opinion, PCs are not. I just think that an operating system should rarely ever crash or freeze up. And everytime i try out a PC, it always just feels so “behind”.
With that said, i have never tried a home-made powerhouse PC, because most people that i know, just buy regular PCs or MACs.
Another thing – Programming on Windows is a lot better than on a MAC, like the JAVA and C#, C++ stuff.
I treat my PC extremely well. I hardly ever download anything on it, and its just not that good at doing the basic things, like internet browsing, email, and whatnot. I think that the whole Windows Vista is awful. Crashes like mad.
What your saying is true, but lets be honest. There are few people that actually have the patience, time and money to build a PC power-house.
January 11, 2010 at 4:48 am #55061shadeblackParticipantdunno about that really…
latest mac book: £816 (average)
2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 3MB on-chip shared L2 cache running 1:1 with processor speed
1066MHz frontside bus
2GB (two 1GB SO-DIMMs) of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM; two SO-DIMM slots support up to 4GB
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory
I can build a PC with the same spec for half the price if not less. and PC much more powerful for about £500-£600.
takes about 20 minutes to put all PC components together and about an hour to install everything and setup all your programs and such.
I understand that the average user simply can't do this kind of thing themselves, but why should change the facts that this CAN be done? if you want a coldhearted comparison, I'd say the PC would win.
Don't get me wrong though, I do like the look and feel of a MAC. But it would never compare to the things I can do on my PC.

I agree with a lot of your points there. I use Windows computers and have it absolutely perfect if i might say so myself. I have it stripped down and working insanely fast without modding hardware. But from an average user’s perspective i would recommend a Mac. You and I can make windows machines work flawlessly but there are a lot of people out there that do not know how computers work, I even met someone who deleted a lot of files from there System32 directory (the files it was allowed to delete anyway) to save space!!!
People don’t care anymore about how a computer works or how to make it faster, the most part they would just like a fast computer. Macs are fast as soon as they come out of the box whereas Windows need a bit of help to make it faster and iron out its problems. You and I may have the patience and skill to do so, the average user doesn’t. Thats why i recommend Mac over Windows, its the easier option for someone with the basic computer skills!January 11, 2010 at 1:04 pm #55087W4RG34R3D_SN1P3RMemberI honestly dont know alot of the specifics your stating here , im currently using a HP Laptop and its my main computer . Now at one point , this thing was screwed . I mean i had no firewall or protection so sooner or later Virus' were going to invade , and so they did . After a while i got fed up , minutes to load one page , and it seemed the only place it did run smoothly on was APT itself . I decided to get the thing cleaned and a great FireWall and AntiVirus Program and it works like a charm . I have loads of programs and editors to fuel my creative mind , and if i really wanted to i can spend hours and hours editing one picture due to the loads of possibilities . A Mac would be nice , but not necessary . As long as i have the form of the Mac and atleast some of the many things it can do , im happy .
January 11, 2010 at 4:10 pm #55103NinjacatMemberI see what you're saying Shade but, I am clearly not as Tech-smart as you are.
I never said I was getting a Mac, just that I am pretty certain. I just put this up to let you guys give me some suggestions for alternatives. I would love a Mac for several reasons.
People that have gone from PC to Mac have all said that the Mac wins hands down.
The OS is, in my opinion, much better that windows. Even windows 7, the most similar to Snow Leopard.
When you are doing work in free periods, the feeling of getting a Mac out is simply amazing. It's like the room stands still just to watch you open it up. A mate of mine has one, first time he got it out…wow, the reaction was so good! A PC seems inferior when sat next to one. And no, I dont want one for bragging rights or anything but, if you had a Mac, like you wouldn't show it off 😉

yeah completely agree. I just think it's a shame that people don't spend the time to learn about the products they have purchased.
@ ninjacat
I honestly don't have anything against people getting mac per say, and i certainly wouldn't discredit you for going with a mac if that's what you're after. here's a couple quick tips for getting a new personal computer, that anyone can understand and should find helpful:
- If you eventually do decide on a PC, don't get something cheap! amazing as it sounds, the cheaper it is, the worse it's going to be as they can be as much as four years old out of the box.
- Avoid nettops, avoid laptops unless you need it to be portable. Like a mac, laptops and nettops are much more expensive to fix when something goes wrong, and in terms of upgrading, are limited.
- A desktop PC is a much better choice, as they are more powerful, the cheapest option, easily upgradable and cheaper than anything else to fix when something goes wrong. the obvious disadvantage is that you can't take easily transport it. however, consider using a decent high-speed USB memory stick to transport important work, rather than taking an expensive laptop or MACbook to school/work everyday with the risk of theft.
- As horrible as it sounds to some people, try and learn a bit about computer technology before you go and purchase the product. this will help you get the best deal for your money, and will stress the salesman. speaking of salesman, instead of going somewhere like PC world, try going to your local PC shop and see what they have first. they'll be able to tell you much more than any large scale salesman will.
- And if in any doubt at all, bring back the specifications of a product you're interested in, and ask someone who a thing or two to check the product out for you before you impulse buy it.
January 11, 2010 at 11:01 pm #55143ecurryMemberWhen you decide on the PC/Laptop you want post any questions about it here before you buy it. Just to satisfy my curiosity
What is your budget ?
What system are you most familiar with – Mac or Win?
What will you be using it for – 3D animation, Photoshop, programming, gaming, entertainment etc.
I agree it is a shame, i hate to see technology go to waste. But at the same time i can understand why it happens. I went to college for 6 years studying Digital and Software Systems thats why I know how to break/fix things, only for that i would be an average PC user- by saying that i mean no offense to anyone.
