First off, I know it's more than 18 months but once you deduct 'The Outage' it's close enough.
The service was pretty derided here when it was launched first and quite a few of ye couldn't fathom how anyone would sign up. Now that we're into uor second year of content I was wondering if views have changed at all?
I signed up on day one, and with the exception of the odd crappy month, I'm still delighted with the service. The last two months alone have given me Trine 2, Shank 2 and Shift 2: Unleashed. There was also the usual clatter of PS1 classics and Minis but those three alone have covered the price of this years subscription.
Cross-game chat never materialised, but I think had that been offered as a subscrition service there would have been riots in the streets. Automatic updates and game saves are fantastic though. The cloud saving being the only way to transfer saves on games that normally prohibit it.
So has anyone joined lately? Or, has anyone let their subscription lapse?
April 7, 2012 at 1:30 am #71594Seibei4211MemberIf they were to ever release cross-game chat as a feature of PS+, I'd drop the money for a year-long subscription the day it got released. They also talked about this feature that would let you do trophy races with your friends and issue challenges and whatnot. That would've gotten me to think about a subscription. There was also this thing about getting exclusive rewards for doing certain things to “level up” your PS+ membership or something weird like that, and I think there were some rewards, but it wasn't fully realized.
I'm more willing to pay for those services more than I'm willing to pay for what they've got on offer now. The discounts are nice, but only if they're discounting a game I already wanted to buy. They had a discount on Closure and Journey, and each time I bought those games, I'd do the process of “Should I get PS+ to get this discount?” But the answer is “No. Of course not.” I don't think I buy enough downloadable games to get my money back through discounts.
Most of the free stuff they offer is just avatars and themes, but since you're only renting those things, basically, they don't factor into the value as much. And I don't remember the last time I saw them offer a game for free that I actually wanted to play. If that ever happened, that would get me my money back fast, since I don't need distant future access to a game I only plan to play once.
Automatic updating seems like more of a convenience than anything. It only saves a little bit of time every now and again. Cloud saving is probably a godsend to some, but it hardly helps me. If I had more than one console, or played on other consoles, it'd be useful, but I don't, so it isn't. It's good for back-ups, but that's not an active help.
The one thing I do really like about PS+ is the full game trials. Those are pretty great for the most part. They have a really big problem that would prevent me from ever using them on my main account though. I like demos because they're risk-free samples of a game. I can play them and not be punished for trying them. With full game trials, they install that damn trophy data onto my local list. It makes no sense to me why you can't get rid of trophies that you haven't even truly earned. You can get rid of 0% lists on the 360. It is a possible thing to do. When they had that free month of PS+, I played a full game trial on my main account and now I'm stuck with that 1% list, while almost every other game is at 100. Since I can't play the full game trials on my second account while keeping the other benefits on my first account without getting two subscriptions, that sours the deal again.
April 7, 2012 at 7:54 am #71595emdeepeeMemberI'd love to be able to get rid of trophy lists of games that I'd rented, hated and then sent back (with anywhere between 0-10% of the trophies then stuck on my account). I didn't realise you could get rid of them on xbox!
All in all I've been pretty happy with my sub, mainly for the free games more than anything else. The automatic updating is something I think that everybody should have had regardless of whether they had a subscription.
And I still couldn't care less about cross game chat
April 7, 2012 at 11:01 am #71598gr8jrfanMemberI signed up pretty early and I still am pleased with it. The service is growing still, IMO, finally offering free games that I want (Shank 2 and Shift 2 most recently) I think what I've liked most is the early access stuff and they need to have more, because then you feel like a privileged member of an exclusive service. The cross game deal hasn't bothered me, considering PS4's right around the corner. Damnit, Sony, you better include enough RAM on it!!
April 28, 2012 at 2:02 am #71647scotty243MemberJust actually bought PS+ an hour ago, so I can't really talk about it all too much as I'm new to the service. As far as that goes, I actually like the service but there is much to it besides a few free games and some themes. I wish they actually did some cool events or something to keep you engaged in PS+ but other than that I'm happy with it so far (especially with SHANK 2). Hopefully once the 3 months end I'll want to buy a full year.
May 31, 2012 at 8:42 am #71866jenkem_addict88MemberI signred up 3 months or so ago when they were giving away the simpsons game, and im super pleased as all hell with plus. I figure when my ps3 goes out, the clouds saves are going to save me alot of displeasure.
Also, there are rumors that they are going to revamp the plus service to include more retail games and vita stuff, but, like i said those are rumors until E3 rolls around next week…
May 31, 2012 at 6:32 pm #71868Doc-BMemberAnd the soon to be on the store 'PSN ultimate editions'… Save a fair bit on those with Plus
As long as you never buy games when they launch that is…

June 6, 2012 at 7:49 pm #71938emdeepeeMemberWell fcuk me sideways!! Eight new games today and currently unable to download a ninth as I've just run out of HDD space!!
Think I've had over £200 so far today for my £40 a year
No sign of Ratchet & Clank though.
June 6, 2012 at 7:53 pm #71940jenkem_addict88Memberif you want, you can go to download the game, and it will be in your purchased list, and have a little red bag next to it. you can download these again anytime even if they are not giving them away for freee anymore, as long as it recognizes it as “purchased” when the giveaway was happening.
saving a few game like this in case i ever really need someting new to play
June 7, 2012 at 12:00 am #71943emdeepeeMemberJust went into the freebie section on PS+ and found another 6 free games (that makes 15 new games for the day). Admittedly they are a few years old now but free's free
June 8, 2012 at 6:11 pm #71947scotty243MemberI'm kinda reconsidering renewing my PS+ subscription when the time comes to renew it. Hopefully, they don't try this 12 free games deal, then next month, shove out like 2 crappy games. Who knows? Hopefully, they start doing this type of thing like every few months or something.
June 8, 2012 at 9:17 pm #71949jenkem_addict88Memberi think the psn games will change either bi weekly or monthly. one of the two, im not sure, well find out in a few weeks i guess.
As far as the retail releases go, one is called the “spotlight game” or some stupid shit like that, and will change monthly. This months game is the afformentioned Warhammer. THe other 5 or 6 retail games will be changed quarterly, aka every 3 months.
So pretty much new 3 month subscription = slew of new games
