SCEA’s announced PS3 Firmware 2.60, saying the update is “coming soon.”
The main additions to the console’s functionality are a photo gallery and DivX 3.11 support.
“The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities,” PSN boss Eric Lempel said on the PSBlog.
“The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection.”
Other additions include:
- Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
- DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.
UPDATE: The software’s confirmed by both SCEE and SCEA as releasing tomorrow.
Alrighty, haven;'t had one of them in a while 😀 Shame about the DivX support though. Aren't we on like 7 now though?

January 21, 2009 at 6:11 am #20522edge4eva32MemberI do NOT want anymore of these lame firmware updates. One of the previous ones crashed my blu ray drive in my PS3. Meaning I couldnt play any games, watch any blu rays, cds, dvds, etc. I almost had to pay for repairs of $150+. Luckily, Circuit City reprinted my receipt to show the purchase, making Sony repair it for free It is sad that they are closing because they were amazing and Best Buy just sucks at prices.

Really? I have never had any problems with firmware updates. Although I do remember one that was recalled because it caused problems. I had already downloaded it, but still had no problems.
January 21, 2009 at 3:41 pm #20528edge4eva32MemberYep that was the one that did crash most drives. I didnt have any problems either for a long time. Then another patch came out and that set off the prior firmware to crash the drive.
January 21, 2009 at 4:10 pm #20530Doctor_RockMemberYeah version 2.40 crashed a lot of PS3's. But, i've also never had any problems with Firmware updates.
It would be nice to see an update that lets trophies and our gamercards load a little faster though.

QFT. It's nice that they're building the PS3 as an equivalent of an PC, but most people don't have the memory to use it like that. Some people are still using a 40GB hard drive, so once they've installed some games and then have a couple of saves they'll be down to at least 20GB. So where are they going to use the extra memory?
January 21, 2009 at 6:55 pm #20539parnakasMemberYESSSSS THANK YOU SONY!!!!!!!!
i couldn’t sync my trophies, but the new update let me and fixed my trophy error!!!! WOO HOO =D
photo gallery rocks too…..January 21, 2009 at 7:38 pm #20542shadeblackParticipantyou guys are forgetting that many people have thier PS3 hooked up to thier TV in the main room, and that some people enjoy having additional music and photos for it.
People DO use the PS3 as a media center. it's about the minority – but in any case it's nice to see them improving the ps3 inany way possible. why hate that?
yeah they did make a mistake on 2.40, but they can't anticipate everything. and if i recall, they supported each one of those crashes with cheaper if not free fixes, and recalled that firmware update within a day to fix it, which only took a week to reissue to the update.
Now i've never had a single problem with a firmware update, but if there is one, then i say, why the hell not.
January 21, 2009 at 8:01 pm #20545edge4eva32Member@Shadeblack: No Sony did NOT issue cheaper or free repairs. The official statement that Sony released informed users of glitches in the firmware. They still deny that the firmware cause any crashes. Therefore, they repaired all broken drives for roughly $175 (after shipping costs, etc) to replace ALL the broken blu ray drives. I know this because I've went through it back in October 2008. Luckily I still had 3 weeks left on my warranty.
Overall, I am happy again. However, this will definitely be the last console I purchase from Sony. I will now go to Microsoft and Nintendo for all future consoles.

I don't think Nintendo will go young with the next system. I believe they have learned that they can't compete in this market without the more hardcore violent games. Also, it would be wonderful if they would kill mario forever.
Now, Microsoft has learned that they did not plan the 360 that well. They were so wishful in pushing the 360 out before Sony or Nintendo. That backfired very quickly.
The point is that Sony is kicking out garbage in all areas of their production. Their TVs are the most commonly repaired TVs on the market, their blu ray players (and firmware) are rated close to the bottom of the charts, their computers crash constantly, and nothing else seems to be getting better for them. Once my PS3 dies again, I will repair it and then sell it with all 30 games that I have.
Oh BTW, Microsoft Xbox 360 is cheaper and has always been cheaper than Sony PS3.
January 22, 2009 at 3:13 am #20556HypnosisMemberYou are correct in saying that the xbox 360 is cheaper than the ps3,but you are forgetting 1 thing. its cheaper cause it doesnt have or do everything the ps3 does. Once you add up all those extras you have to buy for the 360 to make it comarable to the ps3 now you have spent just as much if not more also you still have to pay for online, and on top of all that, you still wont be able to watch blu-ray movies on it. So add another 150$ plus to go buy a seperate blu-ray player. If you open up a 360 also to make the console better, like it should of been from the factory you void your warranty. With sony you can open it up change your hdd, even install a different operating system and your warranty is unaffected.
I dunno. Just my two cents.
I personally have never owned a 360 due to the fact that all my friends who have 1 are on their 3rd to 5th one. All my friends that have a ps3 are still on their first ones, and like me some still have their original ps1 and ps2 that still work perfectly fine. So for me and my friends at least, Sony has been reliable in the console department.
Also I would venture to guess that most of the people who have problems after a firmware update, got the problem from not letting their system update fully before turning off their system or got impatient and were in such a rush to get back to gaming that they canceled something out to early.
Obviously some are legit though as with anything that has parts can break. And with anything the longer you use it the more likely it is to start breaking as is the case with people who never shut off their system lol. Although on the sony forums their are people on their who have launch systems that say they have not turned off their ps3 since they have owned it and theirs is still running fine.
Wow didnt realize how long this got sorry all lol.
January 22, 2009 at 4:08 am #20557shadeblackParticipantlooks like we got another argument on our hands.
First off, I will stand here and let someone say Sony has nothing going for them, when this is clealry speculation of this persons hatred of them. Sony remains in the top 100 brands of the world in at #55, and #9 in Asia. Don't you think they're doing SOMETHING right?
The PS3 is a great product that has NEVER given me, and many millions of other people any problems. In fact, one PS3 crashing is comparable to over 50 Xbox 360s crashing. Speaking of inferior products, the 360s red ring of death occurs 35% of all consoles sold within the first 12 months. This is appualing. How can you defend the 360, and then say “Sony is kicking out garbage”. You sir, are clearly misinformed.
As for TVs and such… Well I can't comment myself on those because I prefer SAMSUNG. But from over the years, Sony are the ones that often come out on top.
Y'know, some say businesses and companies are run by 'descision making'. I agree with this. Every day, companies make vital descisions to esnure the company is always moving forward. Do you really think Sony would be around today if they couldn't make good descisions? They know what they're doing, so you can't badmouth them. espciailly not on a ps3 orientated forum and website. lol.
On the other hand, I will soon be getting a 360 for myself! Well… maybe late this summer. But anyway, i do want one, and hold no grudge towards it. But I'm a logical person. Logic suggests to get the better of everything in specific circumstances. So a few years ago, I had to make a descision myself. Should i get a PS3, or an Xbox360. I looked at specifications of the two machines, prices of the two, the games available, the probability factor of one crashing, lifespam and so on. I chose the PS3 because it ticked A LOT more boxes than the other.
__________
Now back onto the TOPIC!
Firmware updates provide new and often exciting features. Would you really want them to stop and say “You're not getting anything new… Ever again!” ?
I thought not, and rest case.
