Hello, now then i plan on changing my hdd to 320gb or 500gb, but im not quite sure on how im going to go about doing this, i have a series of questions that i need help on many thanks to anyone who helps me out here, and note that im going on holiday tomorrow so dont take any offence if i dont thank you on your helpful work lol. k heres the questions;
1. Is it possible to copy everything onto my internal hdd ?(including my psn games and updates!)
2.if it isnt possible should i de-activate my psn account before changing my hdd?because ive done a lot of gamesharing….
3. What type has the hardrive got to be? , im pretty sure its a laptop 2.5″ SATA but im not sure.
4.Ive read on some forums about not being able to copy more than 32gb `chunks` onto some external hds. is this true? i cant seem to find the model name of it but its a WD one if that helps anyone
5.Could i just use the backup data function then change the hdd and then use the restore data function? will this let me keep my downloaded PSN games?
6. Will i be able to keep all my accounts on my ps3 and their info (i have 5 accounts, Hk, jap, us etc) also a couple of friends accounts for sharing/leveling up on CoDWaW
7. Any one got a video link to someone actually changing their hdd on youtube or another site?
Many thanks to anyone who helps me out here. I will be attempting to change the hdd on the 28th of April.April 3, 2009 at 6:34 pm #22855Doctor_RockMember1. Is it possible to copy everything onto my internal hdd ?(including my psn games and updates!)
A: Absolutley, what you want to do is get hold of a USB memory stick. Put as much data as you can manage on the stick and move it to the PC temporarily. Rinse and repeat until all your data is from the old HDD. Then you can copy from the stick to the new HDD.
2.if it isnt possible should i de-activate my psn account before changing my hdd?because ive done a lot of gamesharing….
A: I'm not really sure about this one. May be best to see if anyone else advises.
3. What type has the hardrive got to be? , im pretty sure its a laptop 2.5″ SATA but im not sure.
A: 2.5 SATA is correct sir! I've heard that 500 gigs don't work though. I have a 320 gig but it only recognises it as a 300 gig one.
4.Ive read on some forums about not being able to copy more than 32gb `chunks` onto some external hds. is this true? i cant seem to find the model name of it but its a WD one if that helps anyone
A: Honestly not sure I'm afraid.
5.Could i just use the backup data function then change the hdd and then use the restore data function? will this let me keep my downloaded PSN games?
A: I'm pretty sure the back up data function is like setting a system restore point on a PC. You can 'reset' the PS3 to that point. I think.
6. Will i be able to keep all my accounts on my ps3 and their info (i have 5 accounts, Hk, jap, us etc) also a couple of friends accounts for sharing/leveling up on CoDWaW
A: Yeah, just remember all the signing in details. (e-Mails, Passwords etc etc)
7. Any one got a video link to someone actually changing their hdd on youtube or another site?
A: *Searches* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-B1mQ21XXLE
Seems like that one should be the ticket 😀 Hope that helped!

2.5″ laptop hard drive.. apparently some larger hard drives data-wise are also slightly physically 'taller' and these types i've heard will not fit in the PS3 bay.. so thats possibly why Doctor_Rock is mentioning 500GBs might not fit.. but i dare say there is 500GB models out there which are small enough physically to fit into the PS3.. i just gotta do some research myself coz i'll upgrade my hard drive after i see this PlayTV goes here (in Australia).
It will only recognize 300/320GB coz of computer system 'formatting' and the fact that Hard drive manufacturers quote a kilobyte as being 1000 bytes instead of 1024 so u lose a bit out of every hard drive.. especially noticeable with larger hard drive sizes.

is that HDD 7200 rpm or 5400 rpm? i plan to upgrade my 320 GB too because the effin thing is almost out of space so fast..
April 4, 2009 at 9:24 am #22885graygolfMemberI have replaced my HDD from the original 60 gb to a 500 gb. The process was pretty painless. I got a 2.5″ 5400 rpm SATA Seagate laptop drive for a really good price from newegg.com. Google info on switching drives since there are some great video and articles on it out there. I only worried about saving my game saves when i did the change and compied them all onto a portible hard drive. Once the new drive was in, i just redownloaded all my DLC.
WARNING!!!! The screws holding the hard drive into the casing in the PS3 are really easy to strip so be careful. I stripped 3 of mine and had to use a Dremel to cut flathead screw slots in them to take them out.
Lastly, i went for the 5400 instead of the 7200 because i had seen some reviews of overheating with the 7200's. I have had this upgrade in for 6 months now with not a single problem and my hard drive is actually running quieter than before.
April 16, 2009 at 4:39 pm #23227XeroTheGreatMemberI'm going to change my internal hard drive too. I plan to put both my current ps3 hard drive and a new bigger one both into my computer and do a complete copy of my old ps3 stuff to my new HDD, through Windows. Will this work?
May 27, 2009 at 1:55 pm #26798Lahmy88MemberI just ordered the Seagate Momentus 7200.4 (500GB, 7200rpm)
Fastest 2.5″ drive around, and reviews say its pretty quiet and pretty low power for such a drive. Can't wait to get it.
Will post speed/load time comparisons soon
May 27, 2009 at 2:27 pm #26807P0kennyMemberI can tell you about the 32GB thing… Because I had to get around if with an external hhd (250GB)…
What you have to do is search the web for a programe called Swissknife, and that will format any external HHD to FAT32 which is what the PS3 recognises. If you try doing this on windows, it can only format upto 32GB partitions and then can only do upto 5 of them on a single HHD. So find that, and download it… It is a free programe and if you need anyhelp for it, don’t hesitate in asking me how to work it on here or PSN.October 12, 2009 at 12:42 pm #45856kukuruzaMemberI'm going to change my internal hard drive too.
