I feel your pain man. The YLOD is a complete balls. And what Sony never seem to tell anyone is that it can't be completely fixed. It can be repaired and it'll work for a while but I've yet to hear of a fixed YLOD that lasted any decent length of time after it came back.
My advice to anyone with a YLOD is get it fixed, back up your data, and trade it in for a new console.
It's harsh having to lose the B/C and two extra USB ports but they're a necessary sacrifice.

Well, just to let you hear it now…My PS3 got the YOLD about a year and a half ago…I got if fixed and its works parfectly. I believe the majority of the reason they go bad again depends on the user and not the PS3. Depending on how much work the PS3 is doing at a time, dictates whether or not the PS3 would have the YLOD again. Of course, from getting the YLOD the first time, I've learned my lesson and now back up my data almost every month.
December 5, 2010 at 11:32 pm #68265ZanatosMemberFortunatly, I had backed up everything 2 days before (learned that lesson the hard way the first time). The thing that kills me is I take great care of it. Keep it well ventilated, don't move it around a lot, never leave it on for nothing. I play a lot of games but that's about it. I think I'll just get rid of the old school model and upgrade for the slim.. Need a warranty with whatever I do.
Sorry bout that post, I was obviously pissed off lol

You've every right to be pissed off. Getting stonewalled by a company you support is enough to boil anyone's blood. And I think the new slim is a wise choice. The warranty gives you peace of mind even though the slim (to my knowledge) is a much more reliable version.
Actually, on that point, (and I know I'm seriously off-topic) has anyone here had a slim YLOD on them?
December 6, 2010 at 6:00 pm #68269KnoxieMemberthe same thing happened to me zanatos! but lucky enough the 2nd time (even tho the 1 month warranty ended) they fixed it again for free! still i was pee'd off to the max that it mustnt have been fixed properly the first time! slim is a very wise choice, never even heard of one break!
anyways, i would like Chris Hughton for xmas now.. yeh, i want him back as Newcastle United manager and i want that fat cockeney b*stard out!!!

For any Scottish… Or (with postage) anyone in the UK really, there's a place in Dundee that will fix pretty much anything wrong with your Ps3 for between £50-90 (cheaper for 360's) and they give you a 6 month guarantee. They'll fix 'modded' (not the modifications themselves, just regular problems) consoles and any HDD data is safe and untouched upon return.

continuing from that off topic piece, theres another company on ebay that repair ps3's ylods for £40 in the uk, however p+p is something you'll have to sort out, and they give you a 12 month warrante. at least thats what i recieved on my ylod 60gb a while back, they assured me they didnt do the heat gun trick, and its been working fine as a downstairs family console ever since with no hitch ups at all! maybe we should make a seperate thread on this, with all the best places to go etc especially from personnal experiences?
