Back in the day there were enough RPG's floating around to choke a horse, but these days, not so much.. it seems that aside from a few exceptions, the last great RPG's died with the SNES and PS1, and that is a sad thing indeed.
just so you all know i'm not talking about action RPG's, turnbased tactical RPG's, hack and slash RPG's, or FPS wanna be RPG's.. what i want is classic chrono trigger, or chrono cross, style role playing awesomeness.. what caused this to happen? makes me wish that square would go back to their roots…
i know i cant truely be alone in this desire for a good RPG.. can i?

CAUTION: GAME IS REALLY, REALLY HARD
October 8, 2009 at 1:26 am #45200shadeblackParticipantcross edge?
October 8, 2009 at 2:05 am #45212x_D3adk0wn_xMember@ratchet – Demon's Souls is an “Action RPG”.. looks neat, but not at all what i'm looking for
as for cross edge, well i'm unsure about this game , everything i've read lead me to think its some grandiose mash up or characters from other games, and i've either never heard of them or never heard of the game..nad playing a game with characters that have a backstory that i know nothing about inst appealing.. but who knows..

October 8, 2009 at 3:16 am #45219One-Wnged_AngelMemberOpen world, customization system, etc, etc…
I think Final Fantasy is the only game next to those RPG elements… too bad every game of the series has a linear story now, right?
For a game to be exactly like Chrono Trigger… it´s kinda hard these days.

i dont mind linear storylines, and i dont want a game exsactly like chrono, i just hate that they just dont make epic RPGs like they used to.. it seems if its not a action rpg its not worth making, hell even the final fantasy series has gone to WoW style action combat, still turn based, but somehow not the same.. i'll just have to make due with playing ffIX or Chrono cross on my psp..
side bar.. square should release a collection for the ps3.. i'm sure they could fit pretty much all the really good rpgs on one disc these days.. lol

Yeah, you're right… but there are a lot of games with good RPG elements nowadays, like Persona and Dragon Quest
October 8, 2009 at 3:23 pm #45255BigWoopMagazineMemberWell, all I see coming up in the RPG genre is White Knight Chronicles, which might be what you're looking for, or Alpha Protocol and Borderlands, which definitely aren't what you're looking for (although they both look to have a lot of potential). I've been wondering the same thing though,,, there used to be a day where they were so epic and so long it'd take a good 40 hours to beat the game, but I didn't mind spending 90 hours finding all the side quests etc. The last game I did that with was Fallout 3… which while its definitely a different style RPG, its still really good. I really do miss games like Breath of Fire, Legend of Dragoon, and Final Fantasy VII. I think the real problem is that for most of them any real strategy has gone out the window, in favor of trying to find new battle systems. I'm really interested in trying out Demon's Souls, maybe the difficulty factor will cause a need for greater strategy.
