What was eventually going to become a Premium service is now sounding like it's going to be a service charged to everyone who uses the PSN.
According to a translated interview Dutch site PS3Clan had with Kaz Hirai (and if you own a PlayStation system and don't know who that is, you should be beaten with a dead fish), Sony is looking at a subscription service that'll cost $60-$80 a year that every PS3 owner will need to purchase.
I'm hoping it's a bad translation but if it isn't, then why the hell did I buy a PS3 (besides being a 100% PlayStation devotee for the past 13 years)? They're removing features for people with the original PS3s and now they're going to charge for the PSN? Sounds like they're going all M$ on us.

Should we trust such a source? No.
Should we trust the translation? No.
…etc
March 30, 2010 at 1:54 pm #60393gow2rulesMemberprobably an april fools joke
but its fake i mean i this was true sony would have to alter the ads right
also its one of the key main features psn has over xbox live and its vastly superior to what it was like when it first started
also over the linux debate who cares i mean honestly who was going to buy a ps3 just for linux
its just to prevent hackers
March 30, 2010 at 2:59 pm #60396tridonMemberDo I trust this source? No… I never even heard of it before now so why would I trust it? Same goes for translation. I'm not Dutch so I'm not even going to try to pretend to know what the interview actually says. I will say, though, that Sony has been talking so much lately about charging for this and charging for that that I honestly will not be surprised to see this happen. I'll pay for it but I sure wouldn't be happy. Also, there's definitely been some broken promises from Sony in the last little while (support for the PSP Go comes to mind) so again, no surprise if this goes through.
As far as an April's Fools joke goes, I doubt it. First off, it's March. Secondly, I don't think April's Fools is a tradition that's commonly celebrated in Japan or even Holland.
Oh, and just because you don't care about the Linux feature (I don't use it, either), that doesn't mean there isn't thousands of others who use it, yet alone bought their PS3 specifically for this feature. The post regarding this firmware update on the PS Blog alone has thousands upon thousands of people furious. I feel bad for the Linux users out there.
March 30, 2010 at 4:10 pm #60397BigWoopMagazineMemberApril's Fools is an American “holiday” (sort of) that was originally the Pagan new year. Christians who hated the pagans changed their new years to the day we now celebrate it on, and then made fun of the pagans who continued to celebrate it when they normally did, calling them april's fools. So no, it is not commonly celebrated anywhere else, that I know of. Also, I find it interesting they never tried this on the chinese… I guess they felt outnumbered.
This story itself is BS though, sony representatives have stated numerous times that the premium service will be optional and in addition to the features that already exist for free. key word – NUMEROUS. not once, but many, many times. Therefore I don't believe this. At any other time of year this would be dubbed unfounded rumor, rather than april fools joke.
March 30, 2010 at 4:41 pm #60401PS3 TrophiesKeymasterAs for April Fool's day it's very popular here in Scandinavia and I'm sure it is in most other parts of the world as well.
March 30, 2010 at 4:56 pm #60402MiiiitchMemberApril Fools has never really been a big thing in AU. As for this I couldn't care less if they start to charge I make enough to cover a yearly subscription fee and I'll be glad to as long as the content we get is good.
As for the Linux thing, out of the 30 or so friends I have that own PS3's 1 of them use this feature. Everyone is only getting angry because they are taking it away not because they actually use it. If the blog had of said that they were adding more OS's for PS3 nobody would have given a shit.
March 30, 2010 at 5:37 pm #60403tridonMemberLooks like it was an early April's Fools joke. Ha… hilarious.
PS3Clan have said it was all a joke. Not sure Kaz will think it's too funny. I have a good feeling there's going to be a lot of backlash towards that site from fans and possibly Sony themselves. Good luck, PS3Clan.

When i heard Sony were in talks with company's like SKY and LoveFilm, the arrival of premium avatars, themes etc. and talks of a Eu version of Quore (or whatever) becoming available i was beginning to wonder how long everything was going to remain free. From what i understand, premium service would be something like…
Cross game chat, custom soundtracks, access to all premium theme's etc. free, access to future online “pay-to-play” MMORPG's free, upgraded HOME space's… Possibly some other things i can't think of…
Everything that's free now will remain free, only new services, or thing's you already pay for anyway, will be effected… Double standards people will cry?? I'm lucky enough to be able to pay for the service, feel for those who can't… Might be crap though?
March 30, 2010 at 8:17 pm #60413LaurensMalterMemberIf this really does happen, i strongly encourage everyone to just turn off your PS3 and keep it off for atleast 2 weeks, if this would be done world-wide, i think Sony would really get the message then, reason i bought PS3, it's free after you buy it!! and also since i've always played PS, never Xbox (first Xbox controller had the same friggin size of a PS2 and had like a thousand buttons on it..)
If this does happen, we shouldn't accept it, don't sell a console first, and then when everyone is started to get addicted to it, they charge you extra, i'm going straight back to my Nintendo 64 if this happens, atleast that was fun and had great graphics considering when it was made..

I can pay for it aswell, but i simply don't want to, i liek it the way it is now, they keep improving and improving when nobody is asking for them to and then they start charging EVERYONE for something NOBODY wants..
If you work for your own money, you definately don't accept this, if mommie is paying for it, well.. what would you care then? (I don't mean you in person lol)
March 30, 2010 at 8:28 pm #60418Doc-BMemberEasy there cowboy… Lol…
Everything that's free will still be free… And i can't really see a world wide switch off, that's just pretty funny to think about. Again, you don't have to pay for anything if you don't want to…
March 30, 2010 at 10:26 pm #60420czesionyoMemberIf they will chose that we will pay for everythnig that's fine as soon as the content will be good.
But hey… Sony won't do it cause they love us :D.
March 30, 2010 at 10:29 pm #60421parnakasMemberAprils Fool joke in March?
