Honestly the best way to avoid getting Yellow light of death is by replacing/upgrading the hdd when you get a ps3. at first, i upgraded to a 320gb but now im upgrading to a 500gb hdd. never have to worry about the yellow light or running out of space……atleast i hope since i am a trophy whore again lol

October 29, 2009 at 10:44 pm #48150I773D33MABL3MemberThe YLOD isn't anything to do with hdd size. It's a problem with the processor overheating and the thermal compound between it and the heat sink cracking. This means that the heat isn't drawn away from the processor and the PS3 YLODs as a warning before any serious damage gets done. A few of you guys have said that you can get your PS3s to work for a while before YLODing but if the heat sink can't do it's job then you're just cooking your motherboard.
October 29, 2009 at 10:52 pm #48153christus11Member@edge4eva32, as I773D33MABL3 says, its nothing to do with the HDD drive. Its purly a overheating issue, the 60GB models are more prone to it, and as the Slim is more power-efficent we should see the problem reduced

Huh? Edge where did you get that from??? It sounds like a really cool new-age myth. Thats like me saying girls can't get pregnant if after intercourse they take 2 shots of Jack Daniels, chase it with 7up and say the alphabet backwards.

No its no myth or mystery. Ive never have had any hdd issues (noise, overheating, ylod, or anything). Then again I upgraded my hdd. If it can be upgraded from factory, then I dont care what it is, I'll upgrade it. Just slap in a new Western Digital into the ps3, and then no more worries. I've never heard of someone performing a successful upgrade and having problems. It just doesn't happen.

Hmm, sorry once again Edge…I'm really not trying to be difficult here….but by that logic: I have never gotten AIDS from unprotected sex, no one I know has gotten AIDS from unprotected sex….I guess we can assume you can't get AIDS from unprotected sex.
All I'm saying is that we shouldn't say that upgrading the HDD will permanently stave off a YLOD just based on all of our personal experiences. There are plenty of people that never upgraded the HDD and never had a problem too.
Oh yeah….and AIDS is bad. Let's all try and avoid that too.
October 30, 2009 at 12:34 am #48164I773D33MABL3MemberMy house mate upgraded to a 250GB hdd and his PS3 got the YLOD a few months later. It has a lot to do with the games you play. Games that suffer from lag or badly coded ports put a lot of stress on your processor.

I agree. First it was pregnancy and now it is unprotected sex. Reminds me of my former English professor who could find a sexual meaning to every poem ever written lol
Honestly, the Yellow light of death is extremely rare. Your blu-ray drive has a higher chance of crashing before your hard drive does. Ive had mine crash twice. My friend had his blu ray crash like 5 times. Yet none of my friends ever got the yellow light.

eh? “Your blu-ray drive has a higher chance of crashing before your hard drive does” were talking about cell proccessers and motherboards crashing not hdd…

No. The blu ray drive (which plays your games and blu rays and dvds) has its own circuitry and motherboard which are separate from the ps3 motherboard. Sony produced tons of faulty drives that crashed. The blu ray drive crashing is similar to 360's RROD, but the 360's RROD is MUCH cheaper to repair.

Seriously??? Sweet deal dude! Look at you, fixing YLOD's with $50 and writing kick-ass trophy guides (http://www.allps3trophies.com/forum/retail-games-guides/far-cry-2-trophy-guide)
How is life on Mars anyways? I hear oxygen is expensive.
