I dont suppose theres any chance of a `insurance` thing while were folding because i have still got the release 60gb model and would not be to happy about losing it it may be safe but still leaving it on for so many hours is something i wouldnt normally do.
Also (it might be off topic if so im sorry) but wouldnt it be kinda cool to have a trophy support on F@H i mean it would certainly motivate a lot of us to fold say you get a bronze trophy for every 3 hours folding and for the bigger streaks prehaps a silver for the more longer streaks. sorry for going off topic but its just an idea……
Not off topic at all..
Well insurance is the fact that the application was developed and tested by Sony themeselves (along with Pande Group / Stanford Uni) and since the PS3 does not suffer the same overheating issues of the 360.. then its very unlikely they'll you'll fall victim to system failure. Computer and computer systems are made to last years and years on end.. so in terms of system life.. your PS3 (just as an absolute guesstimate) but it might last 8 years instead of 10 by folding 24/7 (only even maybe.. might not be a difference at all) but anyways by time this has happened your well into the next gen console anyway.
Trophies have been talked about.. and word is that they might come with the next LwP software update (maybe). But see i find the motivation from just out-gunning other team members.. overtaking others on the team.. coz the PS3 (folding 24/7) produces 1,000 PPD (points per day).. so you can almost calculate when your gunna move up a position. And it would be good to be a part of the All PS3 Trophies subteam.. coz then yous can more compete against each other.

I am very sorry for enabling the hijacking of your thread. I hope I haven't deterred you away from this site due to my mistake. I will talk to the admin about getting a disscussion section.
Once again, I do apologise, and although i do support folding at home, I can only keep my ps3 on when im playing games. after which i have turn it off completely.
Its ok.. hopefully admin will remove the non-related stuff 😉
Cheers

Ok back onto the topic- i have a few questions too because i don`t quite understand some stuff-if i was to fold for lets say half an hour then quit would i have done anuthing or do i have to complete each4-8 hour unit? and can i download demos/games off the PSN store while i am folding? thanks in advance
to kingofgames73
folding irregularly works fine on the computer version.. but the PS3 version was designed to run in 'stints'.. say overnight. However you can still fold in spurts.. nothing wrong with that.. its just because not many ppl know about 'deadlines' is why i always recommend using the auto-shutdown feature after current work unit. You will still have done something productive in a couple of hours of folding.. just make sure you leave enough room before the deadline to run and finish the work unit. Really is best overnite though 😉
Sure can download PSN stuff in the background.. I believe whilst playing games.. all downloads are paused.. but i've seen downloads in action whilst i'm folding. However you can't goto the store whilst folding.. you can only checkout the whole Life with PlayStation software whilst folding.. the Live channel is ok.. just not enough cool features yet.. lacks a bit of polish for now. Just setup PSN store downloads before you goto LwP.. and then they'll continue in the background whilst you fold! 😉

ok, im gonna aim this at the the MAIN POST.
i would love to join, but i have a question (really sorry, i was too lazy to fully read 1st post, but i just scanned through it)..
does this involve leaving the ps3 on for a long period of time? Because i am a very, very high energy consever. Everything in my house is unplugged when it is not being used. I only like to leave my ps3 on for 5 hours at the most, then turn it off for 1-2 hours.
Oh, and i am a high contributer to cancer research, we have all these events like marathons, canoe racing, etc. and i go to as many as i can, and raise money.
parnakas.. you don't HAVE to leave your PS3 on all the time. However you have to leave it going for 4-8hr 'stints' so that the work unit can be fully processed and sent back.. making sure Stanford gets their science.. and you get your points! haha .. now i do appreciate your very green approach .. thats why i included power usage figures above in my main post. If you only did 1 work unit a week, you'd still be helping.. although it'd be great if 4 a week could be done (roughly 1,000 points .. this equals what a 24/7 PS3 can do in a day (1,000 PPD (points per day))) .. Take advantage of the auto-shutdown after current work unit feature.. and you'll maximise your contribution! 😉
Power usage: In my experiences.. a lot of things like modern TVs etc don't actually drain too much from the socket whilst in standby (there is still a fair few products which do) and between the two TVs our family has and a couple of other devices.. total power usage works out to be less than $5/month.. and it gives me the convenience of turning my TV on with a remote control. Lazy? maybe.. but the power usage is negligible.
If you would rather not fold with your PS3, or would rather just not run it too much.. the PC versions make a bit more sense.. as you can do other stuff whilst folding is goin on in the background (it adjusts its CPU usage to only take up the 'left-overs). email me – [email protected] if you want further info on this
I'm sure your charity and contributions are very much appreciated! Cheers
March 22, 2009 at 1:41 pm in reply to: Join the All PS3 Trophies Folding@Home Sub-Team to help fight diseases! #22165Lahmy88MemberOk guys.. no offence.. but yous are getting off-topic.. I appreciate that my thread has created a bit of talk.. but it is really hijacking it.
I just want to clarify that Folding@Home is actually run by a group within Stanford Uni called Pande Group. It's totally not for profit.. and 'Papers' are written with the reasearch gained by the project. These papers are available free to everyone.. so any scientist or whatever can use what they've learned to further their own research.. Pande Group will never 'sell' results or 'sell' their distributing computing power.
Folding@Home is the most powerful supercomputer in operation.. just at 5 Petaflops now! The Petaflop was only broken in late 2007 by F@H.. so we've come a long way through use of PS3s and GPU systems. But I would like to think that distributed computing is something everyone can get involved in.. not just computer enthusiasts.. becoz when you think about it.. it has such potential. People can choose what to put their computers power towards (as they're are many DC projects out there) but i believe F@H is the most worthy, and thats why i support it so much.
Any more wackos wanna put-down my thread.. go ahead.. BUT please start your own separate thread first called 'I'm putting down Folding@Home because i haven't done any research into it'
Any team members?
EDIT: Thanks daxxman.. didn't see your post before i starting my reply 😉

wow, I'm gonna have to make an appointment just to make time to read this beast!
yes indeedy! lol so sorry its really long.. but well.. i had to explain everything. A lot of people try an introduce Folding@Home to people… and when they miss out the details.. people miss deadlines.. don't get points and get disillustioned with it all coz they don't know why they're missing out on points.
EDIT: Please choose a name and stick to it.. coz if u change names.. ur stats won't carry with ya.. and then we end up with a messy lookin team stats page.. full of random All_PS3_Trophies_ names. Just choose one (maybe your PSN id?) and then sub it in for 'Name' here – All_PS3_Trophies_Name_PS3 …… Cheers guys
